Air India Express (IX) is the low-cost airline of the Air India group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India Limited and part of the Tata group. Its booking pages describe hubs at Bengaluru (Bangalore), Delhi and Mumbai (Bombay). It flies mostly in an economy layout across its Boeing and Airbus fleet, with a premium cabin, Xpress Biz, on select Boeing 737-8 aircraft.

At Delhi, Air India Express domestic flights use Terminal 1. Mumbai and Navi Mumbai are separate airports, so check which one your booking names.

Air India Express at Delhi, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Bengaluru airports

Delhi: Terminal 1 for domestic flights

Air India Express's route pages say all its domestic flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), Delhi, operate from Terminal 1 (T1). The Air India group's release of 3 October 2025 said Air India Express would move all its domestic operations to T1 from 26 October 2025, and that the international flights of Air India and Air India Express would continue to operate from Terminal 3 (T3).

The group said guests with connections, carrying boarding passes for their onward flights, get transfers between T1, Terminal 2 (T2) and T3, including on applicable codeshare connections, and that any through-checked baggage is transferred airside. On the group's October 2025 allocation, a connection from an Air India Express domestic flight to an Air India or Air India Express international flight at Delhi would mean moving from T1 to T3, and the release advises guests to verify their flight details and terminal information before travel.

Mumbai and Navi Mumbai: two airports

Air India Express's Mumbai page says it uses Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM), for domestic and international flights, and advises checking the terminal shown on your booking.

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) is a separate airport. Air India Express says it may operate domestic and international flights from separate terminals there, and asks passengers to confirm their terminal before they set off. Its Delhi to Mumbai page places the airport across the harbour from South Mumbai and advises allowing extra transfer time to central or western Mumbai.

Bengaluru

Air India Express's Bengaluru pages say its flights use Terminal 2 at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR), and advise confirming the terminal on your booking.

Air India Express fares: Xpress Lite, Value, Classic and Flex

The fare table on Air India Express's domestic flights page sets out what each economy fare includes. Your ticket decides your allowance, so check it before you fly.

Air India Express's route pages give its Business (Biz) cabin 25 kg of checked baggage on domestic routes, and say the allowance can vary by aircraft type, so check the baggage rules for your flight. Cancellations can be made online through Manage Booking, and any refund depends on the refund policy and how close to departure you cancel.

Air India Express baggage rules

Under its conditions of carriage, Air India Express currently allows one cabin bag within 56 x 36 x 23 cm plus one laptop bag within 30 x 40 x 10 cm, with the two together weighing no more than 7 kg. Its booking page describes the same 7 kg, on every fare, as one bag plus one personal item of up to 40 x 30 x 10 cm. Infants have no free cabin baggage allowance.

The conditions cap a single piece of baggage at 32 kg, and rule out any item over 32 kg with combined dimensions of more than 81 cm high, 119 cm wide and 119 cm deep, with mobility equipment excepted. Baggage above the pre-booked allowance is charged per kilogram at the airport check-in counters on the day of departure. An infant adds 10 kg of free checked baggage to the adult's pre-booked allowance.

Baby buggies, prams, wheelchairs and other mobility devices are carried free when the passenger uses them while travelling and has told the airline. Liquids in cabin baggage go in containers of 100 ml or less, in a transparent resealable one-litre bag presented separately at security.

The conditions treat power banks as spare batteries, carried in cabin baggage only and individually protected against short circuits. A lithium-ion battery may be rated at no more than 100 watt-hours (Wh), and a lithium metal battery may contain no more than 2 g of lithium metal. Allowances and rules can change, so check yours with Air India Express before you fly.

Air India Express check-in, boarding gates and identity documents

Under the conditions of carriage, check-in counters open two hours before scheduled departure and close 60 minutes before a domestic flight, though deadlines may vary at different airports and for particular flights. A passenger who misses the deadline is treated as a No Show and denied check-in, and the booking is non-refundable.

Web check-in opens 14 days and closes 60 minutes before departure. At its discretion, the airline may not offer it to passengers with special service requests, such as extra seats or unaccompanied minors, to passengers on staff, industry-discount, promotional or special-discount fares, and to passengers whose travel a government authority restricts. Its check-in page asks pregnant passengers, passengers travelling with an infant 8 days old or younger, and passengers with reduced mobility or a medical condition needing a wheelchair and special assistance to check in at the airport.

Boarding gates close 25 minutes before scheduled departure. A passenger who arrives later is denied boarding as a No-Show and their checked bag is offloaded. The conditions say boarding announcements may be made only for a change of gate or boarding schedule, and that the airline is under no obligation to make them at airports designated silent airports.

A boarding pass is mandatory for security and boarding, and a valid photo identification (ID) may be requested at any time at the airport. Air India Express's booking page says every flight needs a valid original government-issued photo ID, that photocopies are not accepted at security, and lists these for domestic travel:

  • Passport
  • Aadhaar card (DigiLocker Aadhaar accepted at most airports)
  • PAN card
  • Voter ID
  • Driving licence
  • School ID (for children)
  • Birth certificate (for infants under 2, with a parent's ID)

Infants, children and expectant mothers on Air India Express

Under the conditions, an infant is a passenger below two years old at departure, who sits on an adult's lap, with one infant per adult; infant seat belts are provided on request. Proof of age is required, and an infant without a government-issued photo identity document needs a valid birth certificate at check-in. An infant needs a ticket and a boarding pass, and for a newborn, check the conditions with Air India Express before you book.

The conditions define a child as aged from two to under 12, and require a child to travel with an adult, aged 18 or over, on the same flight. The booking page describes an Unaccompanied Minor service, and the conditions define a minor as a passenger aged five plus to twelve at the time of departure.

For an unaccompanied minor, a parent or guardian submits the form, in four copies, at the airport ticketing counter or a city booking office at least six hours before departure. The parent or guardian escorts the child to the ticketing counter 120 minutes before departure and stays at the airport until the flight is in the air, and the receiving parent or guardian should be at the arrival gate 45 minutes before arrival. Air India Express accepts unaccompanied minors on direct flights, not on connecting or codeshare flights.

The conditions call passengers aged 12 to 18 young passengers, who travel alone only if a parent or guardian signs a Young Passengers Travelling Alone (YPTA) release and indemnity form at the check-in counter and stays at the airport until the flight has departed; a valid photo ID is mandatory. Air India Express's check-in page asks unaccompanied minors aged 12 to 16 to check in at the airport, accompanied by a parent or guardian with a valid photo ID and subject to the YPTA rules.

Under the conditions, an expectant mother has a duty to declare the stage of her pregnancy at the check-in counter or the boarding gate. Air India Express sets its conditions by stage of pregnancy, with documents submitted 48 hours before departure, so check them with the airline before you book. A passenger with a medical condition needs a medical certificate dated no more than 10 days before travel and an indemnity form at the airport, and web check-in is not available to them.
