Surat International Airport (STV) serves Surat, in Gujarat, and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) runs it. AAI and the Ministry of Civil Aviation's releases also call it Surat Airport.

The Union Cabinet approved declaring Surat Airport an international airport on 15 December 2023, and the Prime Minister inaugurated its new integrated terminal building on 17 December 2023. The Ministry of Civil Aviation's release on the decision linked it to export and import operations for the diamond and textile industries.

The terminal building at Surat International Airport

The Prime Minister's Office release on the inauguration says the terminal's facade draws on the traditional woodwork of the old houses of Surat's Rander region. It lists a double insulated roof, rainwater harvesting, water and sewage treatment and a solar power plant among the building's features. The Ministry of Civil Aviation's year-end review says the existing terminal was extended by 17,046 square metres, to 25,520 square metres.

AAI describes a departure hall, an arrival hall and a security hold area, with food outlets on the first floor of the security hold area.

Facilities at Surat International Airport

Food and drink

In the security hold area, AAI lists a Nescafe beverage outlet and a Haldiram's store selling sweets, namkeens and cookies on the first floor, and a snacks bar. An outlet of the Geetha restaurant chain is also listed for passengers waiting in the security area. A canteen is listed near the parking area.

Services in the terminal

AAI lists these at Surat:

  • Free washrooms and free drinking water in the terminal building.
  • A tourist information facility in the arrival area, for tourist places and bookings at tourist destinations.
  • Medical and first-aid help in the arrival area.
  • A child care room for nursing mothers, on the ground floor in the security area.
  • Free trolleys in the arrival hall and outside the departure area.
  • A lounge named the Reserved Lounge, in the departure hall.
  • Airline ticketing counters for IndiGo, Air India Express and Star Air, outside the terminal near departures and reached from the city side.

For a wheelchair, AAI says to ask your airline when you book, or at the airline's ticketing counter once you reach the airport.

The airport has Wi-Fi, and AAI says a valid Indian mobile number is needed to use it. AAI also advises arriving 120 minutes before a domestic departure; check your airline's own check-in cut-off as well.

Baggage and lost property

Baggage carousels are in the arrival hall. AAI says baggage handling and delivery at the airport is the airline's responsibility from check-in to collection, so take a problem with a checked bag to your airline, and ask the airline about anything left on the aircraft. For belongings you have misplaced at the airport, AAI says to contact the Terminal Manager's office.

Parking at Surat International Airport

Parking is in front of the terminal building and is available 24 hours, with spaces for two-wheelers, four-wheelers, minibuses, sport utility vehicles and tempos, and coaches, buses and trucks, plus premium car parking. It is charged by how long you stay, and AAI's Park and Fly page for Surat gives the rates.

Identity and security at Surat International Airport

Identity documents

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at terminal entry, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them.

The CISF says an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof does not need a separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, and foreign nationals should ask their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.

Liquids, banned items and power banks

AAI and the CISF allow liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions.

The CISF's list of items banned from cabin baggage includes lighters, knives other than round-bladed, butter and plastic ones, sporting goods such as bats and golf clubs, tools such as hammers and screwdrivers, and firearms and explosives. A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Ask your airline about any limit on their size or number.

Places to visit in and around Surat

Dumas Beach is about 7 km from the airport, Suvali Beach 20 km and Hazira Beach 27 km, according to AAI.

Other places AAI lists:

  • The Dutch cemetery, with the mausoleum of Baron Hendrik Adriaan Van Rheede tot Drakenstein, who died in 1691.
  • Gopi Talav, which AAI dates to about 1510 and credits to Malik Gopi.
  • Chintamani Jain Temple, which AAI dates to the late 17th century.
  • Jagdish Chandra Bose Aquarium, in the Pal area.
  • Sardar V Patel Museum and Planetarium, also called the Sardar Sangralaya.

Delays, cancellations and your rights

The DGCA sets out what airlines offer when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023. If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more on a flight of more than 2.5 and up to 5 hours, and four hours or more on a longer flight. The CAR does not require meals, refreshments or hotel accommodation where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.

If a domestic flight is expected to be delayed by more than six hours from its published departure time, or from a revised time communicated more than 24 hours before the original departure, the airline offers either an alternate flight within six hours or a full refund. For a delay of more than 24 hours, or more than six hours for a flight scheduled to depart between 2000 and 0300 hours, the airline provides hotel accommodation when necessary, including transfers.

When a flight is cancelled, the airline provides for an alternate flight or a refund, and a passenger who was not told in time is offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules on top of a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking. The CAR does not require compensation for a cancellation caused by extraordinary circumstances, and it says an airline need not pay compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to air traffic control, weather or security risks.

You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check dgca.gov.in for a later revision and your airline's current rules before you rely on this.
