Hyderabad Travel Guide: Charminar, Golconda Fort, Festivals and Flights

Hyderabad is the capital of Telangana, and Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism's website, describes it as a technology and business hub. The same site puts Charminar, in the old city, at the top of its list of sights and calls Golconda Fort another major draw.

Flights land at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD), at Shamshabad, and the main direct routes recorded from there are named below. The India travel guide covers the rest of the country.

What to see in Hyderabad

Charminar and the old city

Charminar stands in the old city and was built by Sultan Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah in 1591. The Telangana government's Hyderabad District page on the monument (last updated in March 2022) says the mosque on its top floor is believed to be the oldest in Hyderabad.

Laad Bazaar, also called Choodi (Bangles) Bazaar, and Mecca Masjid are both near Charminar, and Incredible India says the bazaar is best explored on foot.

Golconda Fort and the Qutb Shahi Tombs

Golconda Fort is in the western part of Hyderabad, about 9 km from Hussain Sagar lake, according to the Telangana government's Hyderabad District page on the fort (last updated in May 2019). The Qutb Shahi Tombs are a further kilometre north-west of the fort, according to India's entry for the monuments on the tentative list of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The same entry says the Qutb Shahi dynasty ruled the region from 1518 to 1687, and describes the tombs complex as tombs, mosques and a mortuary bath.

Inside the fort are ruins of palaces and mosques and a hilltop pavilion with a view over the other buildings. The district page says a clap near the dome entrance at the Fateh Darwaza can be heard clearly at that pavilion. Incredible India says a light and sound show is held at the fort in the evenings.

Golconda Fort and Charminar come under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), so check the current hours with the ASI before you go.

As of October 2026, UNESCO's website lists Golconda Fort, the Qutb Shahi Tombs and Charminar together on India's tentative list, in an entry submitted in 2010, and a 2014 entry, Monuments and Forts of the Deccan Sultanate, takes in the Qutb Shahi monuments at Hyderabad as well.

Salar Jung Museum

Incredible India calls the Salar Jung Museum one of the most prominent national museums in India. As of October 2026, the museum's hours and admission page gives its hours as 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, open continuously, and says it is open every day except Fridays and official closed holidays. The booking and ticket counter closes at 5:15 pm.

The museum says some holiday closures are subject to change with the sighting of the moon, so check its hours and admission page before you go. Admission is charged, a camera or smartphone used for photography needs its own ticket, and there is a cloakroom near the booking counter.

Other sights

Birla Mandir, Snow World, NTR Gardens and a planetarium are near Hussain Sagar lake. Chowmahalla Palace and Nehru Zoological Park are among the city's other sights, and Falaknuma Palace is now a heritage hotel.

Food and film

Hyderabadi biryani, double ka meetha and khubani ka meetha are among the city's dishes, and Incredible India says Hyderabad is famous for its "Midnight Biryani". Incredible India calls Hyderabad the hub of the Telugu film industry, often referred to as Tollywood, and Ramoji Film City, near Hyderabad, is both a film-production centre and a visitor attraction.

Festivals in Hyderabad

Bathukamma is a state festival of Telangana, held during Navratri. Telangana Tourism places it in the latter half of the monsoon, before the onset of winter, and says it begins a week before Saddula Bathukamma, the finale, which falls two days before Dussehra. Check that year's Dussehra date when you plan.

Bonalu, in which the goddess Mahakali is worshipped, is celebrated usually during Ashada Masam, in July or August, especially in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, according to Telangana Tourism.

During Ramadan, Telangana Tourism says the biggest congregation is at Mecca Masjid, near Charminar. Incredible India says Laad Bazaar is at its loveliest and busiest then.

Flying to Hyderabad

Hyderabad's airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, at Shamshabad. The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) runs Pushpak Airport Liner buses between the airport and parts of the city, and radio taxis and app cabs pick up there too. The airport page has the details of each.

Main routes recorded between Hyderabad and other cities

The site's schedule data records direct domestic flights between Hyderabad and Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, and also Pune, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Kochi and Goa (Dabolim). Each name links to its route page.

The airlines recorded on these routes include IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, Star Air and Akasa Air.

The Hyderabad Metro

Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) runs three lines, seven days a week:

  • Red Line: Miyapur to L B Nagar
  • Green Line: JBS Parade Ground to MG Bus Station

First and last train times are on HMRL's train timings page.

HMRL's post of 2 October 2026 reports the launch of a common pass for daily and monthly travel on the metro and on eligible TGSRTC buses within the core urban areas, available at metro stations. Check which buses it covers when you buy it.

The Ramappa Temple, a World Heritage site north-east of Hyderabad

The Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple is in the village of Palampet, about 200 km north-east of Hyderabad in Telangana, according to UNESCO, which inscribed it as a World Heritage site on 25 July 2021. UNESCO describes Rudreshwara as the main Shiva temple in a larger walled complex, built of sandstone with carved granite and dolerite beams and pillars, and a pyramidal structure of lightweight porous bricks known as "floating bricks".

The ASI has maintained it as a protected monument since 1914, and guides on the staff of the Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation are posted at the site. UNESCO describes it as a living temple, where rituals continue to be performed.
