Checked baggage included with the fares we recorded: 15 kg. Airlines sell more; this is what the cheapest fares carried.
Collected between 27 September 2026 and 25 October 2026. Not live — check with the airline before booking.
Air India is the Tata group's full-service airline, and its flights carry the airline code AI. At Delhi, the terminal an Air India domestic flight uses depends on its flight number, so check the booking before you set off for the airport.
Some flights sold on an Air India ticket are operated by Air India Express, the group's low-cost airline. Those flights use a different terminal at Delhi and follow Air India Express's baggage rules, not Air India's.
From 26 October 2025, Air India moved some of its domestic flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2, and its international flights stayed in Terminal 3. Air India says its domestic flights to or from Terminal 2 carry a four-digit flight number starting with 1, and the rest of its domestic flights use Terminal 3. The terminal is shown in Manage My Booking, in web check-in and on the boarding pass, as set out on Air India's Delhi terminal page.
Flights sold on an Air India ticket but operated by Air India Express use Terminal 1, and Air India says they carry a four-digit flight number starting with 9. The Air India routes recorded for Delhi use Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Air India's guide to the change, published on 25 October 2025, lists free shuttle buses between Terminals 1, 2 and 3, a buggy between Terminals 2 and 3 for passengers with reduced mobility, and a covered walkway linking the Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 arrivals areas. It advises allowing at least 30 to 45 minutes to change terminals.
On a domestic connection, or a domestic flight connecting to an international one, bags go through to the final destination if they were checked through; if not, you collect them and check them in again. Bags arriving on an international flight and connecting to a domestic one are collected, cleared through customs and dropped at the Terminal 3 transfer desk.
At Mumbai (Bombay), Air India's page for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) places the airline in Terminal 2, with domestic check-in counters at Aisle B. Premium check-in is at Aisle A, open 24 hours for domestic and international passengers, and self-service kiosks and self-baggage drop are at Row D, in front of gates 2 and 3.
The Air India routes recorded for Mumbai use Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Navi Mumbai International Airport is a separate airport, so check which one your booking names. Terminal arrangements at Mumbai are being changed, so check the terminal on your booking before you set off.
Air India calls its domestic fares Smart Fares: Basic, Value, Classic and Flex. Basic is sold in Economy only and, in Air India's words, is "available only for select domestic passengers". Value, Classic and Flex include a complimentary hot meal, while on Basic meals can be pre-booked for a fee.
Rescheduling costs a standard fee on Basic and Value and a lower fee on Classic, and Air India lists it at no cost on Flex. Cancelling carries a standard fee on Basic and Value, a capped low fee on Classic and the lowest capped fee on Flex, and after a no-show the taxes are refundable. Air India says fare benefits may change without notice and that the rules in force when the ticket is issued apply.
Air India's baggage allowances apply only to flights Air India operates, not to Air India Express or codeshare flights. A flight sold on an Air India ticket but operated by Air India Express follows Air India Express's allowance.
Air India currently allows one cabin bag of up to 7 kg in Economy and Premium Economy, and up to 10 kg in Business and First, at up to 55 x 40 x 20 cm. You can also take one personal item of up to 3 kg and no larger than 40 x 30 x 20 cm, provided it fits under the seat in front, such as a handbag, a laptop in a bag or a camera bag.
A cabin bag over the free weight can be carried, up to 12 kg, only after paying Air India's excess hand-baggage charge, and a bag over 12 kg must be checked in. Air India's page cites the one-hand-baggage rule of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which allows one piece of hand baggage per passenger; the personal item is allowed on top.
On the Value fare in Economy, Air India currently allows 15 kg of checked baggage. For Classic, Flex and the other cabins, the allowance depends on the ticket: Air India's frequently asked questions on baggage say it varies with travel class, fare family, route and Maharaja Club status, and its baggage calculator shows the allowance for a booking reference.
A free allowance under 25 kg is one piece, and 25 kg or more is two pieces, with no single piece over 32 kg anywhere on the Air India network, according to Air India's checked-baggage page, which also lists 23 kg a piece in Economy and Premium Economy. Check the allowance on your booking before you fly.
Air India's cabin-baggage page says power banks count as spare batteries: they go in hand baggage only, each packed individually, rated at no more than 100 Wh, and with a maximum of two spare batteries per passenger. Air India's restricted-baggage page says power banks and spare batteries cannot be placed in overhead bins. Check Air India's current rules before you fly on using or charging them in flight.
Liquid containers over 100 ml are not allowed in the cabin, and smaller ones go in one clear, re-sealable one-litre bag. Medicines and inhalers with a prescription, and baby food, are the exceptions Air India lists.
For domestic flights, Air India's check-in counters close 60 minutes before departure and its boarding gates close 20 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Web check-in usually opens 48 hours before departure and closes an hour before a domestic flight, though Air India says the window may vary.
You can check in on Air India's website, in its app, through its AI.g virtual assistant, or at self-service kiosks, which Air India has at some airports for domestic flights. Passengers who checked in online and have bags to check use the baggage drop counters. Web check-in is not available on codeshare flights.
Air India asks for your ticket and a valid proof of identity, and the name on the e-ticket must match it. Its list includes a passport, a voter identity card, Aadhaar, a driving licence and a photo identity card issued by a central or state government, and identity documents stored in DigiLocker are accepted at airports in India.
A passenger without any of the listed documents can use an attested certificate on letterhead from a Group 'A' gazetted officer, according to Air India's documents page.
Air India says DigiYatra can be used for its domestic flights at major Indian airports, Delhi among them. You download the DigiYatra app, and facial recognition then helps you skip queues at the airport.
Air India treats a child aged from seven days to under two years on the travel date as an infant, and the minimum age to fly is seven days. On the day of travel it asks for proof of the infant's age: a birth certificate, a vaccination certificate or a passport, and the passport is mandatory for international travel. If none can be shown, Air India says it charges an adult fare, subject to a seat being available.
An infant sits on an adult's lap, and Air India's page says extra seats cannot be booked for babies. You can request a bassinet free of charge, subject to availability.
Children aged 5 to 11 travelling alone fly as unaccompanied minors. A parent or guardian hands in Air India's form and a photocopy of government identity at an Air India city booking office or airport ticketing office at least six hours before departure, then comes to the airport at least three hours before departure and stays until the flight has left. The child pays a full adult fare plus a handling fee, and the service applies only to flights Air India operates, not to codeshares or to connections on another airline.
Air India's page says you can fly up to the 32nd week of pregnancy if there are no complications, and up to the 35th week with a certificate of fitness to travel if a normal delivery is expected. After the 32nd week it does not carry a multiple pregnancy or one that may be complicated, and beyond the 35th week it does not carry you at all.

At Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad (AMD), Air India's press note of 27 March 2026 says its domestic flights move from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 from 29 March 2026.
Air India's Fog Care page says passengers whose domestic flight to or from Delhi is likely to be affected by fog can reschedule or cancel with no additional charge. A rebooking goes on any Air India flight between the same two airports within the next 72 hours, and the service can be used once per booking, with any further change or cancellation charged.
Under the Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on denied boarding, cancellations and delays (Revision 4, effective 15 February 2023), an airline does not owe compensation for a cancellation or delay clearly caused by weather, air traffic control or security risks. For a delay, the CAR also has the airline provide meals and refreshments to a passenger who checked in on time once the expected wait reaches a set length that depends on the flight's length, and offer an alternate flight or a full refund when a domestic flight is expected to be delayed by more than six hours. It does not oblige the airline to provide those meals where extraordinary circumstances, as the CAR defines them, caused the delay.
Air India's passenger-rights page refers to the Ministry of Civil Aviation's Passenger Charter, effective 15 February 2023, and sets out the order for a complaint: Air India's customer support portal, then its Nodal Officer, then its Appellate Authority. You can also file a grievance on the AirSewa portal.
Air India is part of the Tata group, and Air India Express is its low-cost subsidiary. On 12 November 2024 Air India completed its merger with Vistara, and Air India now operates Vistara's aircraft.
Air India's loyalty programme is Maharaja Club, renamed from Flying Returns in November 2024, and Club Vistara members moved into it at the merger. Its tiers are Red, Silver, Gold and Platinum, points are earned on Air India, Air India Express and Star Alliance partner airlines, and flights on Air India or Air India Express count towards tier status.
Air India's fleet list as of 18 June 2026, which leaves out Air India Express, names Airbus A319, A320ceo, A320neo, A321ceo, A321neo and A350-900 aircraft and Boeing 777-300ER, 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft.

Air India's notice of October 2025 split its Delhi domestic flights between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, with Terminal 2 flights carrying a four-digit number starting with 1. Flights sold by Air India but operated by Air India Express use Terminal 1, and the terminal is shown in Manage My Booking, in web check-in and on the boarding pass.
