The airport was designated an international airport in 2005, and it is also called Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport.

A civil enclave at an Indian Air Force airbase

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) operates the airport within the Budgam Airbase of the Indian Air Force (IAF), and the IAF operates the runway.

Photography instructions at Srinagar airport

Srinagar is a civil enclave at an Indian Air Force airbase. Follow the instructions of your airline, the cabin crew and airport staff, and the signs, on photography.

The terminal at Srinagar International Airport

There is one terminal, an integrated building for domestic and international passengers. Air India's check-in counters are on the ground floor of the departure terminal, and its baggage unit is in the arrival lounge. The airline also lists self check-in kiosks and self baggage drop as available at Srinagar, so ask your own airline whether you can use them for your booking.

Facilities Air India lists at the terminal

Air India lists these facilities at the terminal:

  • A snack bar and cafes.
  • A lounge.
  • A prayer room.
  • A children's care room and a nursing room.
  • A medical facility.
  • Facilitation for passengers with disabilities.
  • Mobile charging points.
  • A smoking area.
  • Lost and found, and a courier service.
  • Wi-Fi, free for passengers for the first 30 minutes.

Identity documents and security screening

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at terminal entry, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them, and a passenger on an international flight carries a passport.

The CISF list says an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof does not need a separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, and foreign nationals should ask their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.

In cabin baggage, the CISF restricted-articles list allows liquids, aerosols and gels in small quantities for the journey, in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. For power banks and spare batteries, follow your airline's own rule.

Getting to and from Srinagar airport

The Srinagar district administration lists a pre-paid taxi counter, an airport bus service, car rental and online cab booking. Air India's guide puts the taxi pick-up near the departure area.

Tourist help and hotel registration

The Tourism Department runs a Tourist Reception Centre at the airport, for information, assistance and complaints. The Tourist Police helpline is 1363.

The district administration says hotels, houseboats and guest houses keep a register of guests. It asks visitors to carry valid identity, such as an Aadhaar card, passport or driving licence, to check in.

Snow and winter flights at Srinagar

On 27 January 2026, an AAI official said continuous snowfall had left the runway unavailable for safe aircraft operations, and the day's flights were cancelled, as reported by News Arena.

If you fly in winter, check your flight's status with your airline before you leave for the airport. The national rules described below do not require compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to weather.

The new terminal approved in February 2026

On 24 February 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the development of the civil enclave at Srinagar International Airport, as the Government of India announced. The project covers a terminal building of 71,500 square metres, including 20,659 square metres of existing structure, an extended apron and a multi-level car park.

AAI is to carry out the project, and the runway stays with the IAF. The new terminal is approved, not built, so the facilities above are those of the existing terminal.

Delays, cancellations and your rights

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) sets out what airlines offer when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023.

If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach a set length. That is two hours or more on a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more on a flight of more than 2.5 and up to 5 hours, and four hours or more on a longer flight. The airline does not have to provide these where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances as the CAR defines them.

When a flight is cancelled, the airline provides for an alternate flight or a refund. A passenger who was not told in time is offered an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules in addition to a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking.

Revision 4 does not require compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to air traffic control, weather or security risks, or caused by other circumstances beyond the airline's control. It lets you complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check dgca.gov.in for a later revision, and your airline's current rules, before you rely on it.
