Jammu Airport (IXJ), also called Satwari Airport, serves Jammu in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a civil enclave at the Indian Air Force station at Satwari: the Airports Authority of India (AAI) runs the civil enclave, and the Air Force station is the aerodrome operator. The aerodrome's entry places the airfield about 8 km south-west of Jammu Tawi railway station.
Under the aerodrome's published rules, in the amendment effective from 1 October 2026, civil fixed-wing flights keep to a set daily window, the airfield is closed to fixed-wing flights for planned maintenance on some Wednesdays, and photographing the airfield from the aircraft is not permitted. For Katra and the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board says air passengers have to break their journey at Jammu and go on by road or rail.
The aerodrome's entry in India's Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), in the amendment effective from 1 October 2026, permits civil fixed-wing flights only between 0830 and 2100 local time. On the first, third and fifth Wednesday of every month, the same entry shows the airfield closed to fixed-wing flights from 1400 to 2100 local time, for planned maintenance. If you are booking a flight on one of those Wednesdays, confirm the timing with your airline.
The same rules require operators to ensure that no photography or filming of the airfield takes place during the flight, landing, taxiing and take-off, and the crew are to make announcements about it before approach and landing and during boarding. Follow the crew's instructions about photographing the airfield.
A city bus service, general and pre-paid taxis, car rental, and inter-state taxi or car services are available at Jammu Airport, according to AAI's transport table. AAI's Jammu Airport page covers the civil enclave.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board gives Katra as approximately 50 km from Jammu. Private taxis for Katra are available at Jammu Airport and at Jammu Tawi railway station, and a taxi from Jammu normally takes 70 to 80 minutes. Taxis can also be shared on a per-seat basis, and the officially approved rate should be checked before you set off.
Ordinary and luxury buses run from Jammu to Katra: ordinary buses from the State Road Transport Bus Stand, around 1 km from Jammu railway station, and luxury buses from just outside the station. The road trip from Jammu takes around 2 hours. The Jammu & Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) has a coach route from Jammu to Katra, and its Jammu office is at the Rail Head Complex.
Katra is also on the railway from Jammu, which runs by way of Udhampur. On the road, security personnel usually stop vehicles for checks, and visitors are asked to cooperate.
The Shrine Board says pilgrims have to register for the yatra and collect a Yatra Access Card. Its How to Reach Katra page gives the board's road and rail guidance.
The aerodrome's entry lists restaurants and a tourist office at the aerodrome, and a post office, a J&K Bank cash machine and first aid, with hospitals in the city.
In December 2023 the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change granted environmental clearance for the expansion of the civil enclave, covering the new terminal building, car parking, an apron and link taxiways. AAI has also announced that the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the new terminal building.
ETV Bharat reported in June 2026 that the new terminal was being built on the northern side of the existing runway, and the airport director said he expected it to open for public use by the end of 2026. He also said the process for round-the-clock operation had been started, with approval possible once the new terminal is operational.
Security at Jammu Airport is by AAI and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
The CISF publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at entry to the terminal. Each is carried in original with a valid ticket, and a passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them.
On the CISF list, an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof needs no separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, and a foreign national should ask the airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.
Under the CISF's restricted-articles list, liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. The same list keeps lighters, tools, sporting goods such as bats, and knives other than round-bladed, butter and plastic ones out of cabin baggage.
A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Ask your airline about any limit on their size or number.
The airlines recorded on these flights are IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express. Direct domestic flights recorded from Jammu go to:

| Leh | Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) | Air India |
| Mumbai | Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) | IndiGo |

The DGCA sets out what airlines provide when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023. If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach a length set by the flight's block time: two hours or more for a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more for more than 2.5 and up to five hours, and four hours or more for a longer block time. That duty, and the duty to provide hotel accommodation on a long delay, does not apply where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.
If a domestic flight is expected to be delayed by more than six hours from its published departure time, or from a revised time communicated more than 24 hours before the original departure, the airline offers either an alternate flight within six hours or a full refund.
When a flight is cancelled, the airline offers an alternate flight or a refund, and a passenger who was not told in time is offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules on top of a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking, or where the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances.
You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check your airline's current rules, and the DGCA for any later revision of the CAR, before you rely on this.
The aerodrome's entry places the airfield about 8 km south-west of Jammu Tawi railway station, as a distance and bearing from the station.
Private taxis for Katra are available at the airport. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board gives Katra as approximately 50 km from Jammu, and says a taxi from Jammu normally takes 70 to 80 minutes. Buses to Katra leave from near Jammu railway station, and the road trip from Jammu takes around 2 hours.
Not of the airfield. The aerodrome's published rules do not permit photography or filming of the airfield during the flight, landing, taxiing and take-off, and the crew are to make announcements about it before approach and landing and during boarding. Follow the crew's instructions.
