Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is Delhi's main airport, which its operator also calls Delhi Airport. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) runs it under a concession from the Airports Authority of India (AAI): a consortium led by GMR Group won the concession in January 2006, and the agreement with AAI was signed on 4 April 2006 for an initial 30 years, extendable by another 30. The operator puts the airport 16 km from the city centre.
Domestic flights use Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and the terminal depends on the airline and, for some airlines, on the flight number, so check your booking before you set off. Terminal 1 is about 8 km from Terminal 3 on a different metro line, and winter fog can disrupt flights.
The operator describes Terminal 1 as a domestic terminal and says Terminal 2 caters exclusively to domestic flights. Terminal 3 handles both international and domestic flights.
The operator calls it Delhi Airport's New Terminal 1 and lists DigiYatra, self baggage drop, a wait-time tracker for check-in and security queues, and information desks. It is about 8 km from Terminal 3, and the operator lists a free shuttle bus and cabs between the two.
The operator calls Terminal 2 compact, and its terminals overview describes it as a popular choice for many low-cost domestic airlines. According to the operator's Terminal 2 page, IndiGo flights with 2000-series numbers and Air India flights with 1000-series numbers operate from Terminal 2.
Terminal 3 was inaugurated in 2010 and handles both international and domestic flights, with arrivals on the lower level and departures on the upper level. Besides DigiYatra and self baggage drop, it has Common Use Self Service check-in kiosks and fast-track lanes under the Trusted Traveller Program for eligible passengers, including Indian nationals and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders.
The operator's airline list, as it stood in October 2026, and the airlines' own notices of October 2025 place IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, Akasa Air and SpiceJet as shown below. Air India, Air India Express and IndiGo each changed their Delhi terminals from 26 October 2025, according to their own notices, and the operator's Terminal 2 page advises passengers to check their flight details.
| Airline | Terminal, with its source and date |
|---|---|
| IndiGo | Domestic flights numbered 6E 2000 to 6E 2999 use Terminal 2, 6E 5000 to 6E 5999 use Terminal 3, and all other domestic flights use Terminal 1, under IndiGo's notice of 21 October 2025 (effective 26 October 2025) |
| Air India | Terminal 2 for flights numbered in the 1000 series, according to the operator's Terminal 2 page; the operator's list (October 2026) shows Terminals 2 and 3 |
| Air India Express | Terminal 1 for domestic flights and Terminal 3 for international flights, under the airline's notice of 3 October 2025 (effective 26 October 2025); the operator's list (October 2026) also shows Terminals 1 and 3 |
| Akasa Air | Terminal 1, on the operator's list (October 2026) |
| SpiceJet | Terminals 1 and 3, on the operator's list (October 2026) |
Because IndiGo uses all three terminals, the airline's name alone does not tell you where to go. The terminal on your booking or in the airline's app is the one to follow, and you can check the operator's current list on its airline information page.
A free inter-terminal shuttle bus runs 24 hours a day, every 20 minutes according to the operator. Follow the signs and show your boarding pass at the kiosk to get a coupon for the transit bus; at Terminal 1 it leaves from Airport Shuttle Lane 1 at Arrivals for Terminal 2 and from Gate 14 for Terminal 3.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) also runs a paid feeder bus between Terminals 1 and 2 every 20 minutes from the DMRC bus stand. Prepaid taxis, fixed-rate inter-terminal cabs and app cabs run between the terminals around the clock. Terminals 2 and 3 are close together: a short walk, a shuttle ride or a buggy ride apart.
The Airport Express Line, which the operator's page calls the Orange Line, runs between New Delhi Railway Station and Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector 25 with direct access to Terminal 3, and the operator gives the ride from New Delhi Railway Station as around 25 minutes. Terminal 2 is a short walk or shuttle ride from the Terminal 3 station. There are ticket machines at Terminal 3 and at Terminal 2 arrivals.
Terminal 1 is served by the Magenta Line instead, at the underground Terminal 1-IGI Airport station, a 5 to 7 minute walk (300 to 400 m through a covered subway with travelators) from the terminal building, with trains every 5 minutes. The Airport Express Line does not stop at Terminal 1.
Neither line runs through the night: the operator lists the first trains in the early morning and the last trains before midnight, so a passenger arriving late needs a bus or a cab.
Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses run 24 hours a day from Terminal 3 arrivals and Terminal 1 arrivals to stops including Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi railway station and Old Delhi railway station. From Terminal 2, numbered DTC routes such as 534, 717 and 780 run during the day and evening to places including Anand Vihar, Badarpur Border, Najafgarh, Azadpur, Noida Sector 62 and Dwarka Sector 10. A DTC Airport Express Bus also runs from Terminal 2 towards Kashmiri Gate.
Inter-state buses leave from the Public Transportation Centre opposite the Centaur Hotel, which the operator places 2 km from Terminal 3 and 6.5 km from Terminal 1. Punjab's state buses run from there to Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Pathankot, and Haryana Roadways to Karnal, Ambala and Chandigarh.
At Terminals 1 and 2, taxis and app cabs pick up outside the arrivals area; at Terminal 3 the pick-up is on Level 0 of the Multi-Level Car Park. The operator names Uber and Ola at all three terminals, Rapido at Terminal 1 and Evera electric cabs at Terminal 3, alongside prepaid and fixed-rate taxis and car rental.
Visitor parking is open 24 hours a day at all three terminals. The operator also lists Park and Fly, bus parking and parking zones for passengers with reduced mobility.
DigiYatra is available to domestic passengers at Terminals 1, 2 and 3, with e-gates at the departure entry gates and a further step at the boarding gate; at Terminal 2 it covers all entry gates and security zones. The operator's DigiYatra page lists it for Indian citizens with an Aadhaar card. Check the DigiYatra app for any change to who can enrol.
To enter the terminal, carry your ticket and one original photo identity document: a passport, Aadhaar card, driving licence or voter ID card are among those on the list published by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Foreign nationals on a domestic flight should confirm with their airline which document it accepts. Under the CISF list, an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity needs no identity proof of their own, but an airline may ask for more: check with yours.
The CISF carries out security screening. In cabin baggage, liquids, aerosols and gels go in containers of up to 100 ml each inside one clear, resealable one-litre bag, with exceptions for prescribed medicine, inhalers and baby food. Power banks and spare batteries go in hand baggage only, not in the overhead bin, and may not be used or charged in flight, under a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular of 11 November 2025, and your airline may set further limits.
Self baggage drop is available at all three terminals, and the operator lists a wait-time tracker at each terminal showing queue lengths at check-in and security.
The operator says all three terminals have lounge access, through Encalm: a domestic lounge at Terminals 1, 2 and 3, Encalm Prive at Terminals 1 and 3, and the Encalm Xenia first-class lounge at Terminal 3. You get in through a bank card's lounge privileges (check with your card provider) or as a paid walk-in. Pets are not allowed in the lounges.
At Terminal 3 arrivals there is a domestic transit lounge opposite exit gate 1 and an international transit lounge opposite exit gate 6, with nap and shower facilities. A transit hotel is also listed at Terminal 3.
A cloakroom open 24 hours a day takes bags for a few hours or up to 30 days, charges by bag size and length of stay, and asks for a boarding pass and a valid photo ID. It is in the DMRC metro building at Terminal 3; ask the operator about left luggage at Terminals 1 and 2.
The operator lists prayer rooms for Terminals 1, 2 and 3, placed after the security hold area and partitioned into separate spaces for men and women. Medanta runs the medical centres, with 24-hour medical help across the terminals: a health centre at the Terminal 1 arrival forecourt, a clinic in the Terminal 2 check-in hall, and centres at Terminal 3's domestic pier, international pier, transfer area, food court and arrival forecourt.
Terminals 2 and 3 have free wifi, with sign-in by mobile number.
Ask your airline for wheelchair assistance when you book. The drop-off points are Lane 1 of the Terminal 1 departure forecourt opposite Gate 3, the dedicated entry at Terminal 2's Gate 4 (with a help desk nearby), and the lanes opposite Gates 3 and 6 at Terminal 3. Each terminal has dedicated lanes at entry and security and accessible washrooms with call buttons, and the operator also lists buggies at pier junctions and lifts with braille keys.
Winter fog can disrupt flights at Delhi. The operator says the airport is prepared for fog and tells passengers to check with their airline for the latest flight updates. Its winter travel page also shows live runway visibility readings and explains the landing categories up to Category III, which is used in extremely low or near-zero visibility.
Under the DGCA's passenger-rights rules, airlines are not liable for compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to weather. In the fog months, check your flight status before you leave for the airport, and ask the airline what it offers if your flight is disrupted.
The DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) on denied boarding, cancellations and delays (Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4 dated 25 January 2023, effective 15 February 2023) sets what airlines owe. If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments when a delay is expected to reach two hours on flights with a block time of up to two and a half hours, three hours on flights of over two and a half up to five hours, and four hours on longer flights. For a delay of more than 24 hours, it provides hotel accommodation, with transfers when necessary; neither duty applies where the cause is extraordinary circumstances, which the CAR says include delays clearly attributable to weather or air traffic control.
For a domestic flight expected to be delayed for more than six hours from the published scheduled time of departure, or from a revised time given more than 24 hours before the original departure, the airline offers either an alternate flight within six hours or a full refund of the ticket. If the airline cancels, it is to tell you at least two weeks before departure and arrange an alternate flight or a refund; if it does not tell you in time, compensation may also apply, unless the cancellation is caused by circumstances beyond its control such as weather or air traffic control.
You can complain to the airline, which must have a nodal officer and an appellate authority, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to any statutory body or court. The full text is on the DGCA website.
Some destinations on the Delhi list need an entry permit, and Indian citizens and foreign nationals often need different ones. Check the rule for your nationality and destination before you book.
Indian citizens: visitors from other states need an Inner Line Permit (ILP), according to the Aizawl district administration, which says government employees do not need one but carry photo ID. A temporary ILP is valid for up to 15 days, and its issuers include the Resident Commissioner of Mizoram in New Delhi and the Airport Security Officer at Lengpui Airport.
Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for Mizoram, as reported by EastMojo on 6 October 2026, applied for through the online portal of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), e-FRRO. The same report says the Mizoram Tourism website allows the application only after reaching India, and that OCI cardholders are treated like other foreign passport holders. The Aizawl district administration says foreign tourists must report to the Foreigners Registration Office within 24 hours of arrival.
Indian citizens: a Government of Nagaland notification of 20 September 2024 extended the Inner Line to Dimapur district, alongside Chumoukedima and Niuland, with exemptions for categories of long-settled residents, and the Gauhati High Court upheld it, as reported by LiveLaw on 24 July 2026. The notification also exempts people from other states passing through these districts as transit passengers with a valid ticket, so ask the Nagaland authorities whether that covers your trip. Applications are made online on the state's ILP portal, ilp.nagaland.gov.in.
Foreign nationals need a PAP for Nagaland, as reported by All India Radio news on 24 February 2026, applied for online through e-FRRO, and must register with the district's Foreigners Registration Officer within 24 hours of arrival.
Indian citizens: the Manipur Inner Line Permit is issued by the state government to allow an Indian citizen to travel into Manipur for a set period, under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873, extended to Manipur in December 2019. Tourists and short-term visitors use the Temporary category, valid for 30 days and not renewable, and applications are made online at manipurilponline.mn.gov.in.
Foreign nationals need a PAP for Manipur, as reported by EastMojo on 6 October 2026. Check with the Ministry of Home Affairs, e-FRRO or the nearest FRRO before travelling.
Leh is in the Union Territory of Ladakh. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for protected areas such as Pangong, Nubra, Khardung La and Tso Moriri, which the Leh permit portal names. Indian citizens should check the domestic section of the Leh district permit portal, lahdclehpermit.in, before travelling; the portal's home page lists an environmental fee, a Red Cross fund contribution and a wildlife fee for tourists visiting Leh, payable online.
Foreign nationals: under the Andaman and Nicobar Administration's notice, foreign nationals need no Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for the islands excluded from the permit regime, but nationals of Afghanistan, China (including Hong Kong and Macau) and Pakistan, and foreign nationals of origin there, still need an RAP granted after prior Ministry of Home Affairs approval. Myanmar citizens still need an RAP for Mayabunder and Diglipur, separate approvals are needed for reserved forests, wildlife sanctuaries and tribal reserves, and RAP applications are made online at indianfrro.gov.in.
Indian citizens should check any permit requirement with the Andaman and Nicobar Administration before travel.
Indian citizens need a Protected Area Permit for the border and protected areas of Sikkim, according to the Government of Sikkim. For the permit, an Aadhaar card is not accepted as proof of nationality, so carry an Indian passport, voter ID, Indian driving licence or a government-issued ID, plus two passport-sized photographs. The Nathula pass is issued to Indian nationals only, for a one-day excursion, and the state's page says it remains closed on Mondays.
Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit for all of Sikkim (citizens of Bhutan are exempt), OCI cardholders included, and a PAP as well for the border areas. Sikkim Tourism offices in New Delhi and Kolkata are among the places that issue the first permit.

Noida International Airport (DXN), at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh, is a separate airport: the Prime Minister inaugurated its first phase on 28 March 2026, and a Government of India press release of 26 March 2026 describes it as the second international airport for the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). Check which airport your booking names before you travel.
Hindon Airport (HDO), in Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh, is a civil enclave that the Airports Authority of India operates at Hindan Air Force Station, handling domestic flights under the Regional Connectivity Scheme.
It depends on the airline and, for IndiGo and Air India, on the flight number. Under their notices of October 2025, IndiGo's domestic flights are split across Terminals 1, 2 and 3 by flight number and Air India Express flies its domestic flights from Terminal 1; in October 2026 the operator listed Air India at Terminals 2 and 3, Akasa Air at Terminal 1 and SpiceJet at Terminals 1 and 3. Follow the terminal on your booking or in the airline's app.
Yes: the Magenta Line's Terminal 1-IGI Airport station, a 5 to 7 minute walk from the terminal through a covered subway. The Airport Express Line serves Terminal 3, with Terminal 2 a short walk or shuttle ride away, and does not stop at Terminal 1.
Take the free inter-terminal shuttle bus, which the operator says runs 24 hours a day every 20 minutes, and show your boarding pass at the kiosk for a coupon. Terminal 1 is about 8 km from Terminal 3, while Terminals 2 and 3 are a short walk, shuttle ride or buggy ride apart.
Yes, at the 24-hour cloakroom in the DMRC metro building at Terminal 3, for up to 30 days, with a boarding pass and a valid photo ID. It charges by bag size and length of stay.
For Indian citizens, Mizoram requires an Inner Line Permit of visitors from other states and Manipur issues one for travel into the state, and since a notification of 20 September 2024 Nagaland's Inner Line has covered Dimapur district, with exemptions for some long-settled residents; the notification also exempts transit passengers with a valid ticket, so ask the Nagaland authorities whether that covers your trip. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for all three states, as reported by All India Radio news for Nagaland (24 February 2026) and by EastMojo for Mizoram and Manipur (6 October 2026). The permit section above names the issuers for each state.
