Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) is at Shamshabad, Hyderabad. It is run by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), a company the operator says is owned 74% by the GMR Group, 13% by the Airports Authority of India and 13% by the Government of Telangana. The airport opened on 14 March 2008, and the operator says it handled over 30 million passengers in the financial year 2025-26.

The airport has one terminal. DigiYatra face-recognition entry is live for domestic passengers, and Pushpak Airport Liner buses run between the airport and the city.

The terminal at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport

The operator's frequently asked questions page says the airport has had one terminal since 28 November 2022, and its master plan calls the building an integrated Passenger Terminal Building. The operator asks domestic passengers to arrive 120 minutes before departure, and international passengers 180 minutes before.

The operator lists check-in counters, self-baggage-drop units and self-check-in kiosks for passengers travelling with cabin baggage alone.

DigiYatra at Hyderabad airport

DigiYatra is a face-recognition, paperless process for terminal entry and security, introduced by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and run by the DigiYatra Foundation. The operator's DigiYatra page, updated on 11 June 2026, says the service is live for domestic passengers at the airport and lists the departure gates where DigiYatra boarding passes are accepted. You need to be enrolled through the DigiYatra app first, and gate lists change, so check the app and the operator's DigiYatra page before you go.

Identity documents and security screening

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at terminal entry, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among those on the CISF list. A passenger on an international flight carries a passport.

The CISF list says an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof does not need a separate document, while an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, so check with yours. Foreign nationals should ask their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.

In cabin baggage, the CISF restricted-articles list allows liquids, aerosols and gels in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag; medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. Under a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular of 11 November 2025, power banks and spare batteries go in hand baggage, not in the overhead bin, and may not be used or charged during the flight. Check your airline's own rule before you fly, including any limit on battery size or the number you can carry.

The ways to and from the airport that the operator lists are buses, taxis, app cabs and hire cars.

Ramp parking is for quick pick-up and drop-off: the first part is free, and the operator says vehicles left beyond 15 minutes are towed away. FASTag lanes give quicker entry and a cashless exit.

The operator sells visitor entry tickets for domestic departures and for international and domestic arrivals.

Metro plans for the airport

After a state review on 29 September 2024, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited website described a Phase II corridor from Nagole to Shamshabad, with an underground station at the airport, and gave no date for construction to start. Separately, on 6 May 2026 the Government of Telangana said it had asked the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs to approve Phase II of the Hyderabad Metro, and described a corridor from the airport to Bharat Future City as a proposed Phase III.

Entry permits for Sri Vijaya Puram and Sikkim

Flights to Sri Vijaya Puram, and to Bagdogra for travellers going on to Sikkim, lead to areas with entry permit rules. Check the rule for your nationality before you book.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Sri Vijaya Puram)

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration's Restricted Area Permit (RAP) notice is about foreign nationals. It says they do not need an RAP to visit the 29 islands excluded from the permit regime, and that 11 further islands are exempt for day visits, valid to 31 December 2027. Nationals of Afghanistan, China (including Hong Kong and Macau) and Pakistan, and foreign nationals of origin in those countries, still need an RAP granted after prior approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and are refused entry without one.

The same notice says Myanmar citizens need an RAP for Mayabunder and Diglipur, that reserved forests, wildlife sanctuaries and tribal reserves need separate approval, and that any other island, or any purpose other than tourism, needs an RAP in advance. Indian citizens should check the rule for their visit with the Andaman and Nicobar Administration.

Sikkim, from Bagdogra

The Government of Sikkim says foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit for all of Sikkim, with citizens of Bhutan exempt, and that Overseas Citizen of India cardholders need one too. The state says an Inner Line Permit is issued first to foreign nationals at Indian missions, the Sikkim Tourism offices in New Delhi and Kolkata, and the district magistrates' offices at Darjeeling, Siliguri and Rangpo. Nationals of Pakistan, Nigeria, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Myanmar need prior approval from the MHA and the Ministry of External Affairs.

Indian citizens need no Restricted Area Permit for Sikkim, but the state requires a Protected Area Permit from Indian and foreign nationals alike for its border and protected areas. For an Indian citizen's permit, the state accepts an Indian passport, a voter identity card, an Indian driving licence or a Central or State Government identity document as proof of nationality, with two passport-sized photographs. The state says an Aadhaar card is not accepted as proof of nationality, so bring one of the other documents.

Delays, cancellations and your rights

The DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and in force from 15 February 2023, sets what airlines provide when flights are delayed or cancelled, or when a passenger is denied boarding. When a delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more on a flight of 2.5 to 5 hours, or four hours or more on a longer flight, the airline provides meals and refreshments to passengers who checked in on time. When a flight is cancelled, the airline offers an alternate flight or a refund; passengers who were not told in time are offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules on top of a full refund.

The CAR does not require compensation where a cancellation or delay is caused by weather, air traffic control, security risks or other causes beyond the airline's control. You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court.
