Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Mumbai (BOM) is an airport in Mumbai, the city once called Bombay. It is run by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), a joint venture in which Adani Airport Holdings Limited holds 74 per cent and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) holds 26 per cent. Its passenger buildings are Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and its runways, 09/27 and 14/32, cross each other.

The operator reports 55.12 million passengers for the financial year from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025. Mumbai also has Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI), a separate airport, so check which one your booking names before you set out.

Terminal 1 and Terminal 2: the changes reported for October 2026

MIAL announced on 3 October 2026 that it will redevelop Terminal 1 in phases, beginning in January 2027 with the North section of Terminal 1B. After meeting the airlines on 13 October 2026, MIAL said it had committed not to disturb any slots for the winter schedule, that airlines had agreed to start traffic balancing from the summer schedule, and that it would support any airline wanting to move operations to Navi Mumbai International Airport.

On 6 October 2026, Business Standard reported, citing sources, that the Ministry of Civil Aviation had asked MIAL to defer its plan to shift some international flights from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai International Airport and to agree a transition plan with airlines. Until the airport confirms the new arrangements, treat any terminal on your booking as provisional and check it again in the days before you fly, with your airline and on the operator's airline information page.

Earlier terminal swaps were announced by MIAL, as reported by the Free Press Journal on 18 July 2026: Akasa Air was to move all its Mumbai flights to Terminal 2 from 1 August 2026, and Air India Express was to move its domestic flights to Terminal 1 from 1 October 2026, keeping its international flights at Terminal 2. These plans date from before the October reports, so confirm your terminal with your airline.

Moving between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2

The operator runs a complimentary inter-terminal shuttle, which it describes as being for qualifying passengers, so ask your airline or the airport helpdesk whether your journey qualifies before you count on it. Its transport page places the Terminal 1 stop at the arrival exit towards Departure Gate 2, and the Terminal 2 stop on Level 1, the Ground Transportation Level (P4).

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI), a separate airport

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) is a separate airport from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Mumbai (BOM), with its own flights and its own page on this site. MIAL said on 3 October 2026 that Navi Mumbai International Airport being available is what makes it possible to redevelop Terminal 1 in phases.

Check the airport name and code, BOM or NMI, on your booking and plan your journey to that airport. The terminals, transport and facilities on this page are those of BOM.

Check-in, identity documents and security

The operator's frequently asked questions page, which does not name a terminal, places the check-in counters on Level 4 of the departure area, and tells passengers to check the information displays near the terminal entry gates to find their airline. Its facilities list includes self-baggage drop.

At the terminal entrance, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) asks for a valid ticket and one original photo identity document from its list, which includes a passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a driving licence and the voter photo identity card issued by the Election Commission of India. Under the CISF list, an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who has valid identity proof needs none, while an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines can ask for more, and foreign nationals should check with their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.

In cabin baggage, the CISF's restricted-articles list allows liquids, aerosols, gels and pastes in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag, with medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, as exceptions. Power banks and spare batteries go in hand baggage only, not in the overhead bin, and may not be used or charged in flight, under a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025. For any limit on the size or number of power banks, check with your airline.

DigiYatra at Mumbai airport

The operator's DigiYatra page says the service is available at Gate 2 of Terminal 2 for departures, and only to passengers on select domestic flights from Terminal 2; it is not offered to arriving passengers. The same page also mentions a DigiYatra gate at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, so if your airline changes terminal, ask at the terminal entrance whether DigiYatra covers your flight.

Getting to and from the airport

The operator's transport page lists metro stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, as well as Marol Naka and Sahar Road stations. Another of its pages describes Metro Line 1 (Versova to Ghatkopar) instead, with Marol Naka as the station closest to Terminal 2, so confirm the line and station before you set out.

For suburban trains, the operator names Vile Parle (East) station for what it calls the domestic terminal and Andheri (East) for the international terminal. Domestic flights also use Terminal 2, so check with the operator which station suits your terminal before you set out.

The operator lists city bus route 312 at Terminal 1, running to Vile Parle and Andheri stations, and routes 321 and 308 at Terminal 2, along with air-conditioned coaches to Thane, Andheri, the Bandra Kurla Complex, Navi Mumbai and Colaba. Check the route with the bus operator before you travel.

App-based cabs, fleet taxis and car rental are at the arrival level of both terminals, and the operator also lists prepaid taxis. Metered auto rickshaws run from both terminals too, but on suburban routes only, according to the operator.

Parking includes general, premium, two-wheeler and valet options and a multi-level car park serving both terminals, and can be booked ahead online through AdaniOne. Charges depend on the vehicle and the length of stay.

Lounges, prayer rooms and other facilities

The operator lists domestic lounges on Level 3 of Terminal 2, among them Adani Lounge Loyalty, which you can enter from three hours before departure, and Adani Lounge Business Class. In Terminal 1 it lists Adani Lounge T1B in the Terminal 1B domestic departures area, with a maximum stay of three hours, and Travel Club Lounge T1C opposite Gate 22; Terminal 1 is due to be redeveloped in phases from January 2027, according to MIAL. The operator shows each of these lounges as open 24 hours.

Prayer rooms, open to people of all faiths, are in Terminal 2 domestic departures after security, opposite gates 86 and 43. Medical centres staffed round the clock give first aid and treat non-critical conditions: in Terminal 1 near check-in counter 2 and after security opposite Gate 25, and in Terminal 2 in the departure check-in hall behind Island M and in arrivals near gates 68 and 46.

Wifi is free, according to the same questions page, which sends passengers who need a wheelchair or other help to their airline or the airport helpdesk. The operator's facilities list also names a baby care room, a buggy service, charging stations, slumber chairs and cash machines.

Runway maintenance days

The airport has closed both runways for a post-monsoon maintenance day, which MIAL described in 2023 as a yearly practice. In a release reposted on 6 May 2026, MIAL announced that both runways, 09/27 and 14/32, would be out of use from 11:00 to 17:00 on 7 May 2026 for annual pre-monsoon maintenance, which includes inspecting the runway surfaces for wear and tear. The airport said stakeholders had been consulted six months ahead.

Check with your airline whether your flight falls on a runway maintenance day.

Entry permits for Sri Vijaya Puram, and for Sikkim via Bagdogra

Travellers flying to Sri Vijaya Puram, and those flying to Bagdogra to continue to Sikkim, may need a permit arranged before they travel. The rules differ between the two, and for Sikkim between Indian citizens and foreign nationals.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Sri Vijaya Puram)

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration's tourism notice says foreign nationals do not need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit the islands it lists as excluded from the permit regime, and that some further islands are open to them for day visits only. That relaxation does not cover nationals of Afghanistan, China (including Hong Kong and Macau) and Pakistan, or foreign nationals originating from those countries, who need an RAP granted after prior approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs; citizens of Myanmar still need one for Mayabunder and Diglipur. Reserved forests, wildlife sanctuaries and tribal reserves need separate approval, and any other island, or any purpose other than tourism, needs an RAP in advance.

Foreign nationals apply for an RAP online at indianfrro.gov.in. Indian citizens should check with the Andaman and Nicobar Administration for any approval their itinerary needs.

Sikkim (via Bagdogra)

According to the Government of Sikkim, foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit for the whole of Sikkim (citizens of Bhutan are exempt), and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders need one too. Indian citizens do not need that permit, but Indian and foreign visitors alike need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for the state's border and protected areas.

For Indian nationals, the state's page lists an Indian passport, voter identity card, Indian driving licence or a central or state government identity card as proof of nationality, and says an Aadhaar card is not accepted as proof of nationality. For Indian nationals, the state's page also lists two passport-sized photographs and birth certificates for any minors; check with the Government of Sikkim which permit your plans need.

Delays, cancellations and airport changes: your rights

The DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) on passenger facilities (Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective 15 February 2023) sets what airlines owe passengers for denied boarding, cancellations and delays. If an airline offers you a flight to or from a different airport or terminal, it bears the cost of the transfer to or from the original one, unless you were told at least six hours in advance. With terminal changes reported in Mumbai, keep any message telling you of a terminal or airport change, with the time it arrived.

For a delay, the airline provides meals and refreshments if you checked in on time and the delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more on a flight of over 2.5 and up to five hours, or four hours or more on a longer flight. For a domestic flight expected to be delayed for more than six hours from the published scheduled time of departure or a previously revised departure time (communicated more than 24 hours before the original scheduled departure time), the airline offers either an alternate flight within six hours or a full refund of the ticket.

If a flight is cancelled, the airline is to tell passengers at least two weeks before departure and arrange an alternate flight or a refund, and a passenger told less than two weeks and up to 24 hours ahead is also offered an alternate flight or a refund. A passenger not told in time, or who misses a connection on the same ticket, can be owed compensation under the DGCA's rules on top of a full refund. That compensation does not apply where the cancellation is caused by circumstances outside the airline's control, such as weather or air traffic control, or where the passenger gave no email address or phone number when booking.

Complain to the airline first; you can also file the grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal.

Questions about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Mumbai

Which terminal does my flight use at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj airport?

Check the terminal on your booking and in your airline's messages, and check again in the days before you fly. MIAL said on 13 October 2026 that it would not disturb any slots for the winter schedule and that it would meet the airlines again on 28 October 2026, so the arrangements may still change.

Is Navi Mumbai airport the same as Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj airport?

No. Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) is a separate airport from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Mumbai (BOM), so check which code your booking shows. If your airline offers you a flight from the other airport and tells you less than six hours in advance, the DGCA's rules make the airline bear the cost of the transfer.

Can I use DigiYatra at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj airport?

The operator's DigiYatra page offers it at Gate 2 of Terminal 2, for passengers departing on select domestic flights from Terminal 2. It is not offered to arriving passengers.
