Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) is the airport for Kolkata (Calcutta), owned and run by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
In the financial year April 2025 to March 2026, AAI's traffic report recorded about 21.1 million passengers here, about 18.8 million of them on domestic flights. Total passengers were 3.3 per cent fewer than in the year before.
AAI describes domestic and international departure levels and arrival areas, with check-in counters on both departure levels and self-check-in kiosks. It also names golf carts for senior citizens and passengers with special needs at check-in, arrival, the customs area and the aerobridge corridor.
AAI sources told United News of India on 3 June 2026 that extra space had been commissioned at the departure level of the existing terminal building, with more seating in the domestic departure section and in the swing gate zone, which serves both domestic and international travellers.
The Yellow Line of the Kolkata Metro serves the airport at Jai Hind (Bimanbandar), an underground station. The Prime Minister flagged off the Noapara to Jai Hind section on 22 August 2025, and the Government of India said it would significantly improve access to the airport. Metro Railway, Kolkata, part of Indian Railways, runs the line.
AAI's taxi page names pre-paid yellow taxis round the clock on the arrival level, between Gates 3 and 4, managed by the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. It also gives a radio-taxi service run by Mega Cabs (Kolkata Call Taxi) from the arrival lower level, which can be booked by phone or on its website. The page carries no date, so confirm both at the arrival level.
AAI's bus page names air-conditioned coaches run by the West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation (WBSTC), from a WBSTC counter at the arrival level. The destinations it names are Esplanade, Howrah, Tollygunge, Santragachi (via Exide) and Garia. The page carries no date, so confirm the routes at the WBSTC counter before relying on a bus.
AAI says there is car parking at both the domestic and the international levels, as well as two-wheeler parking, space for buses and tempos, and a Park and Fly service. Parking is charged.
AAI's passenger information for Kolkata lists these facilities:
AAI names ramps for wheelchairs, braille and audio signals in the lifts, and accessible toilets. It also lists an ambulift, for a charge.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) asks for one valid photo identity document, in original, with a valid ticket, at the terminal entrance. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a driving licence, a Permanent Account Number (PAN) card and the Election Commission of India's voter photo identity card are among the documents on its list. International passengers carry a valid passport.
The CISF list asks for no identity proof from an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds a valid one, but an unaccompanied minor needs a document from the list. Airlines can ask for more, so check your airline's own document rules, especially with a child or as a foreign national.
If you use DigiYatra, AAI says facial recognition is in use at the entry gates, at security and at the boarding gates in Kolkata.
AAI deploys the CISF for airport security, under the direction of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the aviation-security regulator. Liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag, with no item over 100 ml; medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are the exceptions. The CISF's restricted-articles list keeps lighters, knives other than round-bladed, butter and plastic cutlery, metal scissors with pointed tips, and tools such as hammers and screwdrivers out of cabin baggage.
Power banks and spare batteries travel in hand baggage only, not in the overhead bin, and may not be used or charged in flight, under a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular of 11 November 2025. Ask your airline about any limit on battery size or number.
Direct domestic flights recorded from Kolkata go to the places in the table below. The airlines recorded at the airport are IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, Akasa Air and SpiceJet.
Some destinations have more than one airport, each with its own route page, so check which one your ticket names. The Mumbai (Bombay) area has Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport, and the Delhi area has Indira Gandhi International Airport, Noida International Airport and Hindon airport at Ghaziabad. Goa has Dabolim airport and Manohar International Airport at Mopa.

Some places on this list, and Sikkim beyond Bagdogra, sit in states or union territories with entry permits, and the rules for Indian citizens and for foreign nationals differ. Check the rule for your own trip before you fly.
Indian citizens: Mizoram issues an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to non-Mizo visitors, and the Aizawl district administration says domestic tourists from other states need one. A temporary ILP, valid for up to 15 days for visitors, tourists and business representatives, is issued by Mizoram's liaison officers in Kolkata, Silchar, Shillong and Guwahati and by the Airport Security Officer at Lengpui Airport, among others.
Foreign nationals: a Protected Area Permit (PAP) is needed, as reported by EastMojo on 6 October 2026, and the Aizawl district page says foreign tourists must report to the Foreigners Registration Office within 24 hours of arrival. Apply through the nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or the online e-FRRO portal.
Indian citizens: a Nagaland government notification of 20 September 2024 extended the Inner Line to Dimapur, Chumoukedima and Niuland districts, and the Gauhati High Court upheld it, as reported by LiveLaw on 24 July 2026. Nagaland's ILP portal offers every ILP category online, so check there whether your trip needs one before you fly into Dimapur Airport.
Foreign nationals: a PAP is needed to visit Nagaland, applied for online through the e-FRRO portal, and foreign visitors must register with the district's Foreigners Registration Officer within 24 hours of arrival, as reported by All India Radio news on 24 February 2026.
Indian citizens: the Manipur government issues an ILP, a travel document for an Indian citizen's inward travel to the state for a set period, applied for on the state's Manipur ILP online portal. Check whether your trip needs one before you fly into Bir Tikendrajit International Airport at Imphal. The temporary category, for tourists and short-term visitors, lasts 30 days and cannot be renewed.
Foreign nationals: a PAP is needed, as reported by EastMojo on 6 October 2026. Apply through the nearest FRRO or the e-FRRO portal.
For foreign nationals arriving at Sri Vijaya Puram airport, the Andaman and Nicobar Administration's notice says foreign nationals do not need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit the islands it lists as excluded from the RAP regime, and that for some further islands the exemption covers day visits only, valid up to 31 December 2027. Citizens of Afghanistan, China (including Hong Kong and Macau) and Pakistan, and foreign nationals of origin in those countries, still need an RAP granted only after Ministry of Home Affairs approval, and are refused entry without one. Myanmar citizens need an RAP for Mayabunder and Diglipur.
Reserved forests, wildlife sanctuaries and tribal reserves need separate approvals, and any other island, or any purpose other than tourism, needs an RAP in advance. RAP applications are made online at indianfrro.gov.in.
Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit for all of Sikkim, and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders need one too; citizens of Bhutan are exempt. The Government of Sikkim names Indian missions abroad, the Sikkim Tourism offices in New Delhi and Kolkata, and the district magistrates' offices at Darjeeling, Siliguri and Rangpo among the places that issue the Inner Line Permit given to foreigners first. Nationals of Pakistan, Nigeria, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Myanmar need prior approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs.
Indian citizens need no RAP, but Indian and foreign nationals alike need a PAP for Sikkim's border and protected areas. The Nathula pass is issued only to Indian nationals, for a one-day excursion, and the state lists Nathula as closed on Mondays. For these permits Sikkim does not accept Aadhaar as proof of nationality, so Indian nationals applying carry a valid Indian passport, voter identity card, Indian driving licence or a government-issued identity document on a trip into Sikkim from Bagdogra Airport.
The DGCA's passenger-rights rules say an airline is not liable for compensation for delays and cancellations clearly caused by weather, air traffic control or security risks. A fog delay in winter is therefore unlikely to bring compensation, so leave time between a winter flight and anything you cannot miss.
Passenger rights on flights in India are set by the DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4 dated 25 January 2023, in force from 15 February 2023. If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight of up to 2.5 hours' block time, three hours or more on a flight of more than 2.5 and up to five hours, and four hours or more on a longer one, unless the cause is outside the airline's control.
Airlines are to tell passengers of a cancellation at least two weeks before departure and offer an alternate flight or a refund. A passenger not told in time is owed either an alternate flight or, under the CAR, compensation in addition to a full refund, except where the cause is outside the airline's control. A passenger denied boarding against their will is owed compensation unless the airline offers an alternate flight leaving within one hour of the original time.
You can complain to the airline directly, and the CAR also lets you file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal. Each airline must appoint a Nodal Officer and an Appellate Authority for complaints.

It depends on the state and on your nationality. Mizoram issues an ILP to domestic tourists from other states, Manipur issues one for an Indian citizen's inward travel, and Nagaland has extended its Inner Line to Dimapur district, so check Nagaland's portal before you fly. Foreign nationals need a PAP for all three states, as reported in 2026.
