Veer Savarkar International Airport (IXZ) is about 2 km south of Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly Port Blair), the capital of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, on the east coast of South Andaman Island. The airport is named after Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. A Government of India release of 18 July 2023 described it as the only commercial airport of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The airport is a civil enclave under the control of the Indian Navy, in which the Airports Authority of India (AAI) administers the passenger terminal building and the apron.

The terminal at Veer Savarkar International Airport

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport's new integrated terminal building by video link on 18 July 2023. The building is oyster-shaped.

Getting from the airport into Sri Vijaya Puram

The airport is about 2 km south of the city. AAI's transport pages list a pre-paid taxi service at the arrival area and a paid city bus service on the city side.

Private agencies rent out two-wheelers and four-wheelers to tourists. The main Tourist Information Centre is at the Directorate of Tourism in Sri Vijaya Puram, phone 03192-232694.

Identity and security for your flight

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at terminal entry, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them. Airlines may ask for more, and foreign nationals should ask their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.

The CISF list says an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof does not need a separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does.

In cabin baggage, the CISF restricted-articles list allows liquids, aerosols and gels in small quantities for the journey, in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. Under a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular of 11 November 2025, power banks and spare batteries go in hand baggage only, not in the overhead bin, and may not be used or charged during the flight; ask your airline about any further limit.

Permits for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Indian citizens

Indian citizens need no permit to visit the Andaman Islands, and no passport or visa to travel to the islands. Visiting the tribal areas of the Andaman and Nicobar districts is prohibited.

Foreign nationals

Foreign nationals do not need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit the islands the Andaman and Nicobar Administration's tourism department has excluded from the permit regime, and need no RAP for day visits to a further set of islands, up to 31 December 2027. The rule is set by the department's Restricted Area Permit notice. Confirm that your island is covered before you book; any other island needs an RAP in advance (see below).

This does not apply to nationals of Afghanistan, China (including Hong Kong and Macau) and Pakistan, or to foreign nationals of origin in those countries: they need an RAP, granted only after prior approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs, and are refused entry without one. Myanmar citizens still need an RAP for Mayabunder and Diglipur.

Reserved forests, wildlife sanctuaries and tribal reserves need separate approval from the competent authority, and the exemption does not give access to defence, paramilitary or other sensitive establishments. Any other island, or a visit for a purpose other than tourism, needs an RAP in advance, applied for online at indianfrro.gov.in. On government ships to the Nicobar group, foreign nationals may not travel beyond Hut Bay on Little Andaman.

The Nicobar group

Passengers travelling to the Nicobar group of islands need a Tribal Pass issued by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration.

The road to Baratang through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve

Baratang is about 110 km from Sri Vijaya Puram, 3 to 4 hours by road, and the road passes through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve in a police-escorted convoy. Vehicles join the convoy at the Jirkatang checkpoint, where forest officials check vehicle documents and passenger details. Carry the original of your identity document, as photocopies are generally not accepted at the checkpoint.

A short government vehicle ferry crosses at Middle Strait. Stopping, photography, videography and interacting with members of the Jarawa tribe are prohibited.

Ships and boats to the other islands

Havelock Island, Neil Island and Ross Island now carry the names Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, which the Prime Minister announced on 30 December 2018.

Government ships (Directorate of Shipping Services)

The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) runs ships from Sri Vijaya Puram to nearby islands including Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep, Rangat, Long Island, Strait Island, Mayabunder and Diglipur, and to Little Andaman and the Nicobar group. Its inter-island ferries sail from Phoenix Bay Jetty, and it also runs ships to Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and Chennai on the mainland. Tickets are sold at the shipping counter and on the STARS e-Ticketing Portal, subject to availability.

Passengers on the nearby-island services need a photo ID at booking and at boarding, and the ID on the ticket must match the one shown at embarkation. DSS asks passengers to report 2 hours before sailing, and its embarkation gates close 30 minutes before. All sailings are subject to the weather and to technical reasons, and DSS facilitates a full refund when a voyage is cancelled or delayed by more than 6 hours.

Private boats

The registered private boat operators listed by Andaman and Nicobar Tourism are ITT Majestic, Green Ocean Seaways, Sea Link Adventure and Makruzz Private Limited, each with an address in Sri Vijaya Puram. Contact the operators directly for current information and bookings.

Private boats also leave Aberdeen Jetty, at the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex, for Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, Viper Island, North Bay and harbour cruises.

Weather and the seasons

The islands have a tropical climate all year, and AAI describes October to February or March as the most pleasant months. Andaman and Nicobar Tourism gives Baratang's best season as October to May and its monsoon as June to September, when trails are slippery and the sea crossing and mangrove boat ride can be rough.

Government sailings depend on the weather, so check a sailing's status with DSS before you plan a flight around it.

Delays, cancellations and your rights

The DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023, sets out what airlines provide when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding.

If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach a set length: two hours or more on a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more on a flight of more than 2.5 and up to 5 hours, and four hours or more on a longer flight. The airline is not obliged to provide these where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances, as the CAR defines them, that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. For a domestic flight expected to be delayed by more than six hours from its published scheduled time of departure, the airline offers either an alternate flight within six hours or a full refund of the ticket.

When a flight is cancelled, the airline arranges an alternate flight or a refund. A passenger who was not told in time is offered an alternate flight, or compensation in addition to a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking, or where the cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances.

The CAR does not require compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to air traffic control, weather or security risks. You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check dgca.gov.in for a later revision, and your airline's current rules, before you rely on it.
