The Government of Sikkim gives the distance from Bagdogra to Gangtok as 124 km.

Road distances and transfers from Bagdogra Airport

The Darjeeling district administration's travel page, last updated in 2020, lists a pre-paid taxi stand facility from Bagdogra Airport and from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station. For Darjeeling, smaller vehicles can also be shared or hired at the airport, at the railway station, through motor syndicates and at the police motor stand.

Darjeeling by road, and the nearest stations

Darjeeling is 90 km from the airport by road. From Siliguri, the roads to Darjeeling run by way of Tindharia and Kurseong, Dudhiya and Mirik, Rohini, or Pankhabari.

Buses to Darjeeling run from Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand in Siliguri. Siliguri and NJP are the closest railway stations to Darjeeling.

Gangtok and Sikkim by road

Gangtok is 124 km from Bagdogra, and the Government of Sikkim puts the road journey from Bagdogra or NJP at 4 to 5 hours. Sikkim Nationalised Transport, the Sikkim government's bus service, runs between Gangtok and places including Siliguri, NJP, Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

The Government of Sikkim advises avoiding the heavy monsoon, July to September, because of landslides. The best months to visit are March to June and October to December.

Permits for Sikkim

Bagdogra is in West Bengal, and the permits below are the Government of Sikkim's, for travel into Sikkim. Which permit you need depends on the part of Sikkim you visit and on whether you are an Indian citizen or a foreign national. Check the current rules on the Government of Sikkim's tourism page before you travel.

Foreign nationals visiting Sikkim

The Government of Sikkim says foreign nationals must obtain an Inner Line Permit, issued by Indian missions, the Sikkim Tourism offices in New Delhi and Kolkata, and the District Magistrates' offices at Darjeeling, Siliguri and Rangpo, on the strength of an Indian visa. They also need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for any part of Sikkim, and Overseas Citizen of India cardholders must obtain one too; citizens of Bhutan are exempt from the RAP.

Border and protected areas within Sikkim also need a Protected Area Permit, which the Government of Sikkim says applies to Indian citizens as well. Nationals of Pakistan, Nigeria, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Myanmar need prior approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs before applying for a Restricted Area Permit.

Indian citizens visiting Sikkim

Indian citizens need a permit from the Government of Sikkim for some areas, including North Sikkim, Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and Dzongu. As proof of nationality, the state's tourism department asks for a valid Indian passport, voter ID, Indian driving licence or an identity card issued by the Central or a State Government, with two passport-sized photographs, and it does not accept an Aadhaar card as proof of nationality.

The Government of Sikkim says permits for Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir, for Zuluk and Kupup, and for Lachung, Lachen, Gurudongmar and Dzongu are issued online by the 3rd Mile Police Check post, through government-registered travel agencies and tour operators. The Nathula permit is issued at its permit cell in Gangtok and at some district tourism offices. Ask Sikkim Tourism which permit your itinerary needs before you travel.

The Government of Sikkim issues the Nathula permit to Indian nationals only, for a one-day excursion, and Nathula remains closed on Mondays.

The new terminal approved in 2024

On 16 August 2024 the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister, approved AAI's proposal for a new civil enclave at Bagdogra Airport. The announcement describes a terminal building of 70,390 square metres, designed for 3,000 passengers at peak hour and 10 million passengers a year, with a multi-level car park and a green building design that is to use renewable energy and natural lighting.

On 20 October 2024 the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the new civil enclave at Bagdogra, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said.

Security, identity and lost property at Bagdogra Airport

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at terminal entry, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them, and an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof does not need a separate document. Airlines may ask for more, and foreign nationals should ask their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.

AAI publishes the national list of prohibited items for Bagdogra. Liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, re-sealable one-litre plastic bag; medicine or an inhaler accompanied by prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. For power banks and spare batteries, follow your airline's own rule.

For lost and found baggage, contact the Duty Terminal Manager at the airport.

Delays, cancellations and your rights

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) sets out what airlines offer when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023.

If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more on a flight of more than 2.5 and up to 5 hours, and four hours or more on a longer flight. For a total delay of more than 24 hours, or more than six hours on a flight scheduled to depart late in the evening or overnight, the CAR also provides for hotel accommodation, with transfers when necessary. The airline does not have to provide meals or a hotel where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.

When a flight is cancelled, the airline offers an alternate flight or a refund, and a passenger who was not told in time is offered an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules on top of a full refund. That compensation is not due where the cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances, or to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking.

Revision 4 does not require compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to air traffic control, weather or security risks. You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check dgca.gov.in for a later revision, and your airline's current rules, before you rely on it.
