Dimapur Airport (DMU) serves Dimapur in Nagaland, and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) runs it. It is about 5 km from Dimapur railway station, and the Kohima district website names it as the nearest domestic airport to Kohima, roughly 74 km away. AAI describes it as the only civil airport in Nagaland, built during the Second World War.

Dimapur district is inside Nagaland's Inner Line, and the Government of Nagaland's ILP portal says anyone who is not an indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland needs an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter the state. The portal takes online applications, and a tourist application made outside working hours may not be approved until the next working day.

Nagaland's Inner Line Permit

Who needs the permit and how to apply

Under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873, anyone, Indian or foreign, who is not an indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland needs an ILP to enter the state for a limited period, according to the Government of Nagaland's ILP portal. A notification of 20 September 2024 extended the Inner Line to Dimapur district, along with Chumoukedima and Niuland. The state's consolidated ILP guidelines, in force from 1 September 2025, set a domestic tourist permit valid for 30 days.

Tourists need no guarantor but must give a local contact. You apply on the Nagaland ILP portal under the Tourist category, with a phone number and a one-time password. The portal says a tourist application made during working hours may be approved within four hours, and one made outside working hours, or close to their end, within the first three hours of the next working day.

For a permit issued by hand, the portal points to the Nagaland Houses named on its home page, or the office of the Deputy Commissioner of the district concerned.

The guidelines exempt transit passengers from producing an ILP. If you think the exemption may apply to you, check with the ILP portal before you travel.

The tourist permit counter at Dimapur Airport

On 30 November 2025 the Government of Nagaland's Directorate of Information and Public Relations announced that the Tourism Department, with the district administrations of Dimapur and Chumoukedima, had set up a Tourist Information Counter at the arrival area of Dimapur Airport to serve tourists arriving by air. The release said the counters process offline tourist ILPs only. A second centre, at the Senior Tourist Officer's Office in Dimapur, is within walking distance of the railway station and the bus stand.

Foreign nationals

The ILP rule covers foreign nationals too, and the 2025 guidelines have a separate tourist category for foreigners, also valid for 30 days. A foreign national visiting Nagaland also needs a Protected Area Permit (PAP), as the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, restated in a press note reported by All India Radio news on 24 February 2026. Applications are made online through the e-FRRO portal of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), and foreign visitors register with the district's Foreigners Registration Officer within 24 hours of arrival.

Getting to and from Dimapur Airport

Auto-rickshaws are available at the airport during operational hours, and so is a car rental service. Dimapur's taxi stand is next to the railway station, and the yellow taxis there can be hired shared with other passengers or for yourself alone.

For Kohima, roughly 74 km away, Nagaland Tourism suggests flying to Dimapur and going on by taxi, and taxis run from Dimapur to Kohima. The Kohima district website says buses run by the Nagaland State Road Transport also ply between Dimapur and Kohima.

IndiGo check-in and baggage

IndiGo's check-in counters for domestic flights close 60 minutes before scheduled departure, and its boarding gates close 25 minutes before departure. IndiGo recommends reporting at least 2 hours before departure.

IndiGo's baggage policy allows one cabin bag of up to 7 kg and 55 x 35 x 25 cm, plus one personal article, such as a laptop or a ladies' purse, of up to 3 kg. IndiGo gives a domestic checked allowance of 15 kg per person. A customer on a Lite Fare or similar promotional fare may not be allowed checked baggage unless excess baggage charges are paid at the airport counter. IndiGo says baggage requirements differ from flight to flight, so check your booking confirmation and ticket.

Identity and security for flights from Dimapur

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) list of photo identity documents accepted at entry to the terminal, carried in original with a valid ticket, includes a passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence. On the CISF list, a child travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof needs no separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, so check with IndiGo.

Under the CISF's restricted-articles list, liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag; medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Ask IndiGo about any limit on their size or number.

Delays and cancellations

IndiGo's Plan B page lets you rebook on a different flight at no additional cost, or take a full refund, if IndiGo cancels your flight, brings it forward by 1 hour or more, or postpones it by 2 hours or more. IndiGo says it notifies eligible passengers by SMS, email and calls on the registered contact details.

The DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023, sets what airlines provide for delays and cancellations, and it is the document to read for the full terms. Under it, the duty to provide meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation during a delay does not apply where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Cancellation compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking.

The Hornbill Festival and Kohima War Cemetery

The Nagaland Tourism website lists the Hornbill Festival for 1 to 10 December 2026. It describes the festival, conceptualised in 2000, as a ten-day annual tourism event organised by the State Government to show Nagaland's traditional cultural heritage.

In Kohima, Nagaland Tourism describes the Kohima War Cemetery as a memorial to the soldiers who lost their lives in the Battle of Kohima in the Second World War, set in landscaped gardens.
