Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) is Guwahati's airport, at Borjhar in Assam. The operator says it was granted the status of a fully operational international airport in 2000, and that its single 3,110-metre runway serves both civil and military aircraft.

Guwahati International Airport Limited runs the airport, managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited. In a stock-exchange filing, Adani Enterprises said its subsidiary signed a concession agreement with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on 19 January 2021 for the airport's operation, management and development, running for 50 years from the commercial operation date.

Terminal 2 and Terminal 1

As of October 2026, the operator's airline information page lists IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express and Akasa Air at Terminal 2, the new terminal building.

The Sentinel, an Assam newspaper, reported on 22 March 2026 that domestic operations began at Terminal 2 on 22 February 2026, with IndiGo still at Terminal 1 and a phased move planned. Air India said that it and Air India Express would operate all their flights from Terminal 2 from 16 March 2026, and The Sentinel reported on 17 July 2026 that the airport had announced IndiGo's move to Terminal 2 from 20 July 2026.

Some of the operator's service pages, for taxi pick-up, lounges, DigiYatra and special assistance, give Terminal 1 as the location. Check the terminal on your booking or with your airline before you set off.

In its announcement of the inauguration, the Prime Minister's Office described the new terminal building as designed to handle up to 13 million passengers a year.

Getting to and from the airport

Air India's airport page puts the airport about 20 km from the city centre. The operator names Kamakhya Junction as the nearest railway station.

Taxis, app cabs and auto rickshaws

The operator lists pick-up points, which it gives as Terminal 1, for prepaid taxis, local taxis, Uber, WTI Cab and Smarto Cab, and Air India's airport page also lists Ola and Rapido. Auto rickshaws wait in the auto parking area and, by the operator's account, run on the meter.

Buses

The operator lists an Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) bus among its pick-up services, and says electric air-conditioned buses connect different parts of the city with the airport. Ask at the bus pick-up point for the route before you rely on a bus.

Parking

The operator charges for parking by vehicle type and length of stay, with separate tariffs for private cars, commercial vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and buses, and a night-parking option. The operator's parking page links to online pre-booking, and lists valet parking and a Park and Fly option. According to the operator, commercial vehicles, including app taxis and autos, are not eligible for complimentary parking.

Facilities at the airport

The operator lists:

  • An information desk, a tourist counter, and lost and found.
  • Wi-Fi. Air India's airport page says free Wi-Fi is limited to two hours and needs a valid Indian phone number.
  • Charging stations, automated teller machines (ATMs) and baggage trolleys.
  • A baby care room, a prayer room and a smoking room.
  • Self-check-in kiosks, self-baggage drop, baggage wrapping and airline ticketing counters.
  • A transit hotel, and the Pranaam meet-and-greet service, which includes personalised assistance, baggage handling and priority check-in.

Air India's airport page adds a money-exchange counter in departures and another in arrivals, a medical facility and a children's play area.

Lounges

The operator's lounge page lists The Lounge 1 and The Lounge 2 in domestic departures, after security, in Terminal 1. Each is open 24 hours to business-class passengers, card holders and walk-in customers, with access from up to three hours before a flight's scheduled departure, and the Pranaam Elite package includes lounge access. Confirm with the operator which terminal the lounges are in before you count on them.

Accessibility

The operator provides wheelchair help in both the departure and arrival areas, which can be booked in advance at the ticketing counter or through your airline. It also lists ramps, accessible restrooms, a dedicated parking space, and help phones with Braille.

Check-in, identity and security

Check-in

The operator asks domestic passengers to arrive two hours before their flight, with a valid photo identity document, their ticket or e-ticket and, if they checked in online, their boarding pass. Self-check-in kiosks and self-baggage drop are available alongside the check-in counters. The operator notes that hand baggage allowances differ by airline, so check yours with the airline before you pack.

Photo identity

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) asks for one valid photo identity document, in original, with a valid ticket, at the terminal entrance. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a driving licence and the Election Commission of India's voter photo identity card are among the documents on its list, and international passengers carry a valid passport.

The CISF list asks for no identity proof from an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds a valid one, but an unaccompanied minor needs a document from the list. Airlines can ask for more, so check your airline's own document rules, especially with a child or as a foreign national.

DigiYatra

The operator's DigiYatra page puts the gate at the entry to Terminal 1 at departure, and says only passengers on selected domestic flights departing from Terminal 1 can use DigiYatra. You register with Aadhaar in the DigiYatra app, scan your face at the gate, pass e-gates before and after security, and board at self-boarding gates. Passengers who have not registered can do so at the terminal entry, with help from the operator's Digi Buddies, but ask your airline whether your flight is included.

Security screening

The CISF screens all passengers and hand luggage, and the operator asks for electronics and keys in separate trays. Liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag, with no item over 100 ml, taken out and placed in a tray; medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are the exceptions. The operator lists satellite phones and drones as not permitted in hand or checked baggage.

Power banks and spare lithium batteries go in hand baggage only. Check your airline's own rule on power banks, including any limit on battery size or number, before you pack.

Arriving on a domestic flight

Domestic passengers go straight to the baggage reclaim area, where screens show the belt numbers, and then to the arrival hall, where people meeting passengers wait. Taxis, cabs and buses leave from outside the terminal. The operator's transport page gives Terminal 1 for its pick-up points, buses and auto rickshaws, so ask where the pick-up point is when you arrive.

Entry permits for Aizawl, Dimapur, Imphal and Sikkim

Aizawl, Dimapur and Imphal, on the list above, are in states with entry permits, and Bagdogra Airport, also on the list above, serves the road to Sikkim. The rules differ by state, and between Indian citizens and foreign nationals, so check the rule for your own trip before you fly.

Mizoram (Aizawl)

Indian citizens: Mizoram issues an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to non-Mizo visitors, and the Aizawl district administration says domestic tourists from other states need one. A temporary ILP, valid for up to 15 days for visitors, tourists and business representatives, is issued by Mizoram's liaison officers in Guwahati, Silchar, Shillong and Kolkata and by the Airport Security Officer at Lengpui Airport, among others. Travel Trade Journal reported on 19 May 2026 that Mizoram's cabinet had approved fresh ILP guidelines, with the details not yet officially released, so check the current rule for your trip before you fly.

Foreign nationals: a Protected Area Permit (PAP) is needed, as reported by EastMojo on 6 October 2026, and the Aizawl district page says foreign tourists must report to the Foreigners Registration Office within 24 hours of arrival. For how to apply, check with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or the e-FRRO portal. EastMojo's report adds that, according to the Mizoram Tourism website, foreigners apply for the PAP online through the e-FRRO portal and can apply only after reaching India.

Nagaland (Dimapur)

Indian citizens: a Nagaland government notification of 20 September 2024 extended the Inner Line to Dimapur, Chumoukedima and Niuland districts, and the Gauhati High Court upheld it, as reported by LiveLaw on 24 July 2026. Nagaland's ILP portal offers every ILP category online, so check there whether your trip needs one before you fly into Dimapur Airport.

Foreign nationals: a PAP is needed to visit Nagaland, applied for online through the e-FRRO portal, and foreign visitors must register with the district's Foreigners Registration Officer within 24 hours of arrival, as reported by All India Radio news on 24 February 2026.

Manipur (Imphal)

Indian citizens: the Manipur government issues an ILP, a travel document for an Indian citizen's inward travel to the state for a set period, applied for on the state's Manipur ILP online portal. The temporary category, for tourists and short-term visitors, lasts 30 days and cannot be renewed. Check whether your trip needs one before you fly into Bir Tikendrajit International Airport at Imphal.

Foreign nationals: EastMojo reported on 6 October 2026 that the Ministry of Home Affairs reimposed the PAP regime in Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram on 17 December 2024, so a PAP is needed. For how to apply, check with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the nearest FRRO or the e-FRRO portal.

Sikkim

Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for all of Sikkim, and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders need one too; citizens of Bhutan are exempt. The Government of Sikkim names Indian missions abroad, the Sikkim Tourism offices in New Delhi and Kolkata, and the district magistrates' offices at Darjeeling, Siliguri and Rangpo among the places that issue the Inner Line Permit given to foreigners first.

Indian citizens need no RAP, but Indian and foreign nationals alike need a PAP for Sikkim's border and protected areas. For Indian nationals, the Government of Sikkim lists a valid Indian passport, voter identity card, Indian driving licence or a Central or State Government-issued identity document as proof of nationality, and says an Aadhaar card is not accepted as citizenship or proof of nationality.

Delays, cancellations and passenger rights

The Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Revision 4 dated 25 January 2023 and effective 15 February 2023, sets what airlines owe passengers for denied boarding, cancellation and delay. If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight of up to 2.5 hours' block time, three hours or more on a flight of more than 2.5 and up to five hours, and four hours or more on a longer one, unless the cause is outside the airline's control.

Airlines are to tell passengers of a cancellation at least two weeks before departure and offer an alternate flight or a refund. A passenger not told in time is owed either an alternate flight or, under the CAR, compensation in addition to a full refund. A passenger denied boarding against their will is owed compensation unless the airline offers an alternate flight leaving within one hour of the original time.

The CAR says an airline is not liable for compensation for delays and cancellations clearly caused by weather, air traffic control or security risks, so leave time between a flight and anything you cannot miss. You can complain to the airline directly, or file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal.
