Lengpui Airport (AJL) serves Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. It is at Lengpui in Mamit district, about 30 to 35 km from Aizawl, and it has one terminal, for domestic flights.
The airport was constructed in February 1998 and was the first airport in India to be built by a state government. Domestic tourists from other states need a Mizoram Inner Line Permit (ILP), and foreign nationals have separate rules, so check the permit before you book.
IndiGo is the airline recorded on these flights. Direct domestic flights recorded from Aizawl go to:
| Destination | Airport | Airlines recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Kolkata | Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) | IndiGo |
| New Delhi | Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) | IndiGo |
| Guwahati | Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) | IndiGo |
The Government of Mizoram issues the ILP to people who are not Mizo, and domestic tourists from other states need one. The temporary ILP, for visitors, tourists and business representatives, is valid for up to 15 days. A regular ILP, valid for up to six months, needs a sponsor who is a bona fide indigenous resident and is issued by Deputy Commissioners.
At Lengpui Airport, the temporary ILP is issued by the Deputy Superintendent of Police in charge of Airport Security. The Resident Commissioner of Mizoram in New Delhi and liaison officers at Kolkata, Guwahati, Silchar and Shillong issue it too. Check the current process on the Aizawl district ILP page before you travel.
Foreign nationals have separate rules from Indian citizens. The Aizawl district administration says foreign tourists must report to the Foreigners Registration Office within 24 hours of arrival, and that citizens of Afghanistan, China and Pakistan need prior approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Check the current rule with the MHA, your nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or the e-FRRO portal before you book.
Taxis are available at the time of scheduled flights.
There is a post office in the terminal building and a restaurant at the airport. Banks are in the city.
For domestic flights, IndiGo's check-in counters close 60 minutes before scheduled departure and its boarding gates close 25 minutes before departure. IndiGo recommends reaching the airport at least 2 hours before departure, and it reserves the right to cancel the booking of a passenger who misses these times.
IndiGo's baggage policy allows one cabin bag of up to 7 kg and 55 x 35 x 25 cm, plus one personal article of up to 3 kg, such as a purse, a laptop or a small infant bag if travelling with an infant. The free checked allowance depends on the fare, and a Lite or other promotional fare may carry no checked baggage unless you pay excess baggage charges at the airport counter. IndiGo says the most accurate details for your flight are on your booking confirmation and ticket, so check those before you pack.
If IndiGo delays a flight by more than 2 hours or brings it forward by more than 1 hour, you can take a full refund or rebooking onto another IndiGo flight at no additional cost, subject to availability. IndiGo says compensation for a cancellation or delay is processed under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, and that a passenger who gave no valid contact details at booking may not be entitled to it. The CAR sets the conditions, so read it for your case. IndiGo does not connect to other airlines and is not responsible for losses when a passenger tries to connect to or from another airline.
Carry an original photo identity document with your ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among the documents on the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) list. Airlines may ask for more, and a foreign national should ask the airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.
Under the CISF's restricted-articles list, liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions.
A DGCA circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Ask IndiGo about any limit on their size or number.
The Aizawl district administration's list of tourist places includes the Mizoram State Museum and Solomon Temple, a non-denominational church. Further places on the same list are Khawhpawp Falls, about eight kilometres from Aizawl, and Tam Dil, near Saitual and about 87.5 km from Aizawl.
