Gaya Airport (GAY), also known as Bodhgaya Airport, serves Gaya in Bihar, and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is its operator. The airport is about 11 km south of Gaya railway station.
AAI puts it 5 km from Bodhgaya, which it describes as a temple city and Gautama Buddha's place of enlightenment. The Mahabodhi Temple is at Bodhgaya.
Taxis and trains are available from Gaya city. At the airport, there is a car-rental service at the Visitor Area and a tourist information office.
There are hotels in Gaya city and in Bodhgaya.
Services at the airport include Swagat Seva meet and greet, drinking water, tourist information, help for passengers who are disabled, elderly or unwell, a child care room, wheelchairs and trolleys, medical and first aid, a prayer room, mobile charging points and Wi-Fi. State Bank of India is at the arrival gate.
The Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee gives the opening of the Mahabodhi Mahavihara, the temple's main shrine, as 5 am and its closing as 9 pm. Check current times on the committee's website before you visit.
Other places the Airports Authority of India names for visitors to Gaya include the Vishnupad Temple, Dungeshwari Cave, Rajgir, Nalanda, Pawapuri, the Barabar Hills and Vaishali.
Direct domestic flights recorded from Gaya go to these places, with IndiGo as the airline recorded on each:
| Destination | Airport | Airlines recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Kolkata | Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) | IndiGo |
| New Delhi | Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) | IndiGo |
On domestic flights, IndiGo closes its check-in counters 60 minutes before scheduled departure and its boarding gates 25 minutes before departure. It recommends reporting at least 2 hours before departure.
IndiGo's baggage policy allows one cabin bag of up to 7 kg within 55 x 35 x 25 cm, plus one personal article of up to 3 kg, such as a purse or a small bag containing a laptop. Its allowance page gives 15 kg of checked baggage per person on domestic flights.
A Lite fare, or a similar promotional fare, includes no checked baggage; it can be added for a charge, including at the airport check-in counter before the counters close. IndiGo says baggage requirements differ from flight to flight, so check your booking confirmation and ticket.
A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among the photo identity documents on the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) list for entry to the terminal, carried in original with a valid ticket. On that list, a child travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof needs no separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, so check with IndiGo.
Under the CISF's restricted-articles list, liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in containers of up to 100 ml each, in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag; medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are the exceptions. A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries go in hand baggage only, not in the overhead bins, and that power banks may not be used or charged during the flight. Ask IndiGo about any limit on their size or number.
IndiGo's Plan B lets you rebook on a different flight at no additional cost, or take a full refund, if IndiGo cancels your flight, brings it forward by 1 hour or more, or postpones it by 2 hours or more. IndiGo says it notifies passengers in advance by SMS if they gave an SMS-capable mobile number at booking, and sends the revised itinerary to their registered email address.
The DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023, sets what airlines must provide when flights are delayed or cancelled. The duty to provide meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation during a delay does not apply where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Cancellation compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking.
The same CAR says airlines are not liable to pay compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to weather, air traffic control or security risks.
It is 5 km from Bodhgaya, according to the Airports Authority of India. The airport is also about 11 km south of Gaya railway station.
The Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee gives 5 am for the opening of the main shrine and 9 pm for its closing. Check with the committee before you visit.
