Bhuj Airport (BHJ) serves Bhuj, in Kutch district, Gujarat. Gujarat Tourism's Great Rann of Kutch page calls it the Rudra Mata airport. India's aeronautical information publication lists Bhuj Airport as a civil enclave.
Direct domestic flights recorded from the airport are with Air India, to Mumbai and New Delhi. Gujarat Tourism calls Bhuj the closest air and rail node to the Rann of Kutch, which it puts about 85 km from the city.
According to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the railway station is about 3 km and the bus stand about 5 km from Bhuj Airport. AAI says private taxis and auto services are available from the airport, and that most hotels also offer pick-up from the airport for their guests.
For travel beyond Bhuj, Gujarat Tourism says the city's railway station "lies on the western railways network" and that state and private buses serve Bhuj from all major parts of Gujarat.
According to AAI, the conveniences at Bhuj Airport include free Wi-Fi, a child care room, assistance for physically challenged, aged or infirm passengers, wheelchairs and trolleys.
Direct domestic flights recorded from Bhuj Airport go to:
| Destination | Airport | Airlines recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Mumbai | Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) | Air India |
| New Delhi | Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) | Air India |
Air India publishes its check-in, baggage and passenger rules on its website, and says its baggage allowances apply to flights Air India operates. Check the rules below against your own booking before you fly.
On domestic flights, Air India's check-in counters close 60 minutes before departure and its boarding gates close 20 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
Air India allows one piece of hand baggage of up to 7 kg in Economy (10 kg in Business) and gives the bag size as 55 x 40 x 20 cm. You can also carry one personal item, such as a handbag, a laptop in a bag, a camera or a folding umbrella, provided it fits under the seat in front and weighs no more than 3 kg. With an infant, Air India allows personal and infant cabin items weighing up to a total of 5 kg, in addition to the cabin bag.
Air India's checked-baggage page sets Economy allowances by fare brand: 15 kg on Value, 20 kg on Classic and 25 kg on Flex. Air India says the allowance depends on travel class, fare family, route and Maharaja Club membership status, so your ticket decides what you can check in.
Air India treats power banks as spare batteries, to be carried in hand baggage only and packed individually, with at most two per passenger and each no more than 100 watt-hours (Wh), in Air India's words. A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular of 11 November 2025 adds that power banks and spare batteries must not go in the overhead bins and are not to be used or charged during the flight.
Air India counts a child as an infant if they are over seven days and under two years old on the travel date. Proof of age can be a birth certificate, a vaccination certificate or a passport, and without one on the day an adult fare may be charged, subject to seats being available. An infant travels on an adult's lap, one infant per adult, and strollers are not allowed on board, though you can ask for a bassinet, subject to availability.
Air India's unaccompanied minor service covers children aged 5 to 11 who have not yet turned 12, on Air India-operated flights only. A parent or guardian submits the forms at an Air India office at least six hours before departure, reaches the airport at least three hours before the flight, and stays there until it leaves.
Air India sets limits on flying in pregnancy by week, asks for an obstetrician's certificate from the 33rd week and does not allow travel beyond the 35th week. Check with Air India before you book.
Air India's Fog Care page offers passengers on fog-hit Delhi flights scheduled for early morning or late evening one change or cancellation per booking at no additional charge. That means rebooking on an Air India flight with the same origin and destination within 72 hours, or a refund for the affected part of the journey. Air India notifies affected passengers by WhatsApp and email before they travel.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) list of photo identity documents accepted at entry to an airport terminal includes a passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence, carried in original with a valid ticket. An infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof needs no separate document on the CISF list, but an unaccompanied minor does. Air India asks for its own proof of age for infants, set out above.
In cabin baggage, the CISF restricted-articles list allows liquids, aerosols and gels in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions.
Passenger rights on domestic flights are set by the DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023. If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments during a long delay, at thresholds that depend on the flight's length. It does not have to provide them where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.
A passenger not told of a cancellation in time is offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the CAR together with a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking, or where the cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances. The CAR lists meteorological conditions, air traffic control and security risks among the causes for which an airline need not pay compensation.
You can complain to the airline, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court.
Gujarat Tourism describes the Rann of Kutch as "a massive expanse of cracked earth, inland from the sea". In the monsoon the marsh fills with water, and in the summer the water dries to leave a bed of white salty land. Gujarat Tourism also describes tribal hamlets of mud huts as the epicentre for Kutchi embroidery, tie and dye, leatherwork, pottery, bell metal craft and Rogan painting.
Gujarat Tourism names Kalo Dungar (the Black Hills), Narayan Sarovar and the Chhari Dhand Wetland Reserve among the attractions near the Rann. It says the Rann Utsav, a winter festival, begins in Bhuj city and goes around the district; check its pages for the current season's dates.
Dhordo, the village at the White Rann, was recognised in the 2023 edition of the Best Tourism Villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, according to Gujarat Tourism, which also notes its mud craft and Mutwa embroidery.
Gujarat Tourism points visitors to the Gujarat government's online permit portal for the White Rann at Dhordo. The portal says it is only for Indian nationals.
Dholavira, a Harappan city on the arid island of Khadir in Gujarat, was inscribed on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2021. UNESCO describes it as the southern centre of the Harappan Civilization, occupied between about 3000 and 1500 BCE, with a fortified city and a cemetery. It is protected and managed by the Archaeological Survey of India, and Gujarat Tourism names it among the destinations near Dhordo.
Gujarat Tourism says the Aina Mahal, a palace in the walled complex of Bhuj's old town dating from the 1750s, lost its top storey in an earthquake, but the lower floor is open to visitors. It was built for Maharao Lakhpatji by Ram Singh Malam, and its museum holds Kutch jewellery, weaponry and art. Gujarat Tourism names Prag Mahal, the Kutch Museum and Sharad Bagh Palace as nearby attractions.
Shyamji Krishna Varma, whom Gujarat Tourism calls "one of the foremost freedom fighters in the history of the freedom movement of India", was born in Mandvi town in Kutch district on 4 October 1857. Gujarat Tourism also names Bhuj as the nearest airport to Mandvi.
According to AAI, the railway station is about 3 km and the bus stand about 5 km from Bhuj Airport. AAI says private taxis and auto services are available from the airport, and that most hotels offer pick-up for their guests.
