Vijayawada International Airport (VGA) is at Gannavaram, in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) runs it. AAI describes it as a public international airport serving the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region.
The airport is outside the city, and the three figures below put Gannavaram between about 16 km and 25 km from Vijayawada.
The Deccan Chronicle reported on 19 July 2026 that the Union Civil Aviation Minister, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, had inaugurated a newly built air traffic control tower at the airport on 18 July 2026, and that the previous facility had operated from a building nearly five decades old. The same report said the new terminal building was still under construction.
Check with your airline or AAI before you fly whether the new terminal has opened, and which building your flight checks in at.
AAI puts Gannavaram 25 km from Vijayawada, while the Krishna District administration's travel page (last updated in 2019) gives 17.9 km from the city, and the NTR District administration describes the aerodrome at Gannavaram as about 16 km away.
AAI says National Highway 16, which connects Chennai and Kolkata, passes through the area.
The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) lists Pandit Nehru Bus Station in Vijayawada, whose enquiry line is 0866 2523926, and a bus station at Gannavaram, among its bus stations. Ask APSRTC at either station which of its buses stop at or near the airport.
The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026 (Act No. 7 of 2026), published in the Gazette of India on 6 April 2026, names Amaravati as the new capital of Andhra Pradesh and is deemed to have come into force on 2 June 2024. Under the Act, Amaravati includes the capital city areas notified under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014.
AAI describes Vijayawada International Airport as serving the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region.
AAI lists the Kanaka Durga Temple, the Undavalli Caves, Bhavani Island and the Prakasam Barrage among Vijayawada's tourist places.
The Ministry of Tourism describes the Undavalli Caves as near Guntur and dates them to the 7th century and the Vishnu Kundina dynasty. It names Vijayawada International Airport as the nearest airport and Guntur Junction as the nearest railway station.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at entry to the terminal building, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them, and an international passenger carries a valid passport.
The CISF list says an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof does not need a separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, and foreign nationals should ask their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.
AAI's security information for Vijayawada airport sets the liquids rule for hand baggage: each item no more than 100 ml, all packed in one clear, resealable one-litre bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are the exceptions.
The same page lists sharp objects, tools, firearms and flammable items among the items prohibited in hand baggage. A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular of 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage and not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks during flight is not allowed. Ask your airline about any limit on their size or number.

The DGCA sets out what airlines provide when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023.
If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, or three hours or more on a flight of over 2.5 and up to five hours. On a longer flight the threshold is four hours or more.
The CAR also provides for hotel accommodation, with transfers when necessary, for a total delay of more than 24 hours, or more than six hours on a flight scheduled to depart between 2000 and 0300 hours. The airline is not obliged to provide meals, refreshments or hotel accommodation where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.
When a flight is cancelled and you are told at least 24 hours before departure, the airline offers an alternate flight or a refund. A passenger who was not told in time, or who misses a connection on the same ticket, is offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules together with a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking, or where the cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances.
For cancellations, the CAR does not require compensation where the cancellation is clearly attributable to air traffic control, weather or security risks, or caused by other circumstances beyond the airline's control. You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check dgca.gov.in for a later revision, and your airline's current rules, before you rely on these rules.

Not as of the Deccan Chronicle's report of 19 July 2026: the new terminal building was still under construction. Check with your airline or AAI for its status before you fly.
