Getting from Tirupati Airport to Tirupati and Tirumala

Taxis, hire cars and buses at the airport

AAI's transport pages for Tirupati list a car rental service and a prepaid taxi service in the arrival area, at the Arrival Hall near the exit gate, for trips within the city, up to the Tirumala hills and to temples nearby. AAI lists Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses from the city side of the airport to Tirupati and Tirumala, at regular intervals that it says follow the flight timings.

AAI's bus page gives the journey as 30 minutes from the airport to Tirupati city centre, and 90 minutes from the airport to the bus stand in the Tirumala hills, for the Lord Venkateswara Temple.

From Tirupati up to Tirumala by road

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) describes an up ghat road of about 17.80 km and a down ghat road of about 18.00 km between Tirupati and Tirumala. APSRTC runs buses up to Tirumala from Tirupati's railway station, its central bus station, Sri Padmavathi Bus Station and Balaji Link Bus Station. You can also drive or hire a taxi or maxi cab, and a toll is collected at the Sapthagiri toll plaza.

TTD says the ghat roads are normally open to vehicles from 3 am until midnight, and that buses and other transport are banned from them between midnight and 3 am, except on special occasions when vehicles may use them round the clock. If your flight lands close to midnight or later, you may reach Tirupati after the ghat roads have closed for the night, so allow for the journey from the airport.

Walking up to Tirumala

TTD describes stone footpaths up the hills from Alipiri and from Srivari Mettu. Its travel page puts the Alipiri walk at about three hours and the Srivari Mettu walk at about an hour and a half.

Free buses run by TTD or APSRTC take walkers from Tirupati railway station to Alipiri and to Srivari Mettu. Walkers can leave their luggage at the foot of the hills and collect it later from TTD's free luggage counters. TTD asks pilgrims to consider their health before they take the footpaths.

TTD's dress code for some darshan categories at Tirumala

TTD introduced a traditional dress code in 2013, first for pilgrims attending Arjitha Sevas. It has since extended the code to very important person (VIP) pilgrims seeking break darshan, and to general pilgrims on the paid darshan categories.

For men, TTD's dress code page gives a dhoti or pyjamas with an upper cloth. For women, it gives the preferred dress as a saree or half-saree with blouse, or a churidar with pyjama and upper cloth. If you plan a darshan covered by the code, check TTD's page before you pack.

Facilities at Tirupati Airport

AAI asks passengers to arrive 90 minutes before a domestic flight. Check your airline's own check-in deadline as well. AAI's pages for Tirupati show check-in counters and self check-in kiosks, baggage trolleys in the departure and arrival areas, and an ATM near the departure entry on the city side.

The same pages show wheelchairs, lifts accessible to passengers with disabilities, mobile and laptop charging points and touchless drinking water. They also show child care rooms and smoking lounges in the check-in area and on the first and second floors of the Security Hold Area, along with a medical inspection room with a paramedic and an ambulance on call. Massage chairs in the Security Hold Area are paid for.

For food, the pages show Arakku Valley Coffee in the public concourse, a snack bar on the first floor of the Security Hold Area, and EAT & FLY for breakfast, lunch and drinks in the domestic departures Security Hold Area.

AAI says the airport's Wi-Fi needs a valid Indian mobile number, and its pages show "May I Help You" desks and a tourism information counter run by Andhra Pradesh Tourism, which helps passengers with temples and places to visit in and around Tirupati.

Car parking is available, with separate parking for passengers with disabilities at both departures and arrivals.

Identity and security at Tirupati Airport

Identity documents

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at entry to the terminal building, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them.

The CISF list says an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof does not need a separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, and foreign nationals should ask their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.

Liquids, banned items and power banks

The CISF's restricted-articles list allows liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. Lighters, knives, tools such as hammers and drills, sporting goods such as bats and golf clubs, and pepper spray are among the items the list bars from cabin baggage.

A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Ask your airline about any limit on their size or number.

Places to visit in and around Tirupati

AAI's page for Tirupati Airport lists places to visit that include the Tirumala Venkateswara Swamy Temple, the Goddess Alamelumanga Temple (Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple), Srikalahasti Temple, Chandragiri Fort, Akasa Ganga, Swami Pushkarini and Tallapaka.

AAI puts the Tirumala temple 39 km from the airport and the Goddess Alamelumanga Temple (Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple) 11 km from the airport.

Delays, cancellations and your rights

The DGCA sets out what airlines offer when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023. If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more on a flight of more than 2.5 and up to 5 hours, and four hours or more on a longer flight. The CAR does not require meals, refreshments or hotel accommodation where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.

If a domestic flight is expected to be delayed by more than six hours from its published departure time, or from a revised time communicated more than 24 hours before the original departure, the airline offers either an alternate flight within six hours or a full refund. For a delay of more than 24 hours, or more than six hours for a flight scheduled to depart between 8 pm and 3 am, the airline provides hotel accommodation when necessary, including transfers.

When a flight is cancelled, the airline provides for an alternate flight or a refund, and a passenger who was not told in time is offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules on top of a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking. The CAR does not require compensation for a cancellation caused by extraordinary circumstances, and it says an airline need not pay compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to air traffic control, weather or security risks.

You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check dgca.gov.in for a later revision and your airline's current rules before you rely on this.
