Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport (Vizag), airport code VTZ, serves Visakhapatnam from Bhogapuram, in Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh. The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, inaugurated it on 1 August 2026, and commercial flights began there on 17 August 2026.
GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited, a subsidiary of GMR Airports, developed the airport and runs it under a 40-year concession. Its runway is 3,800 metres long and can take wide-body aircraft.
All India Radio reported on 17 August 2026 that IndiGo and Air India Express flew the first flights from the new airport that day, and that Air India was moving all its flights to and from Visakhapatnam there, under the existing code VTZ. Before that date, flights to Visakhapatnam used the civil enclave of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at INS Dega.
A Ministry of Civil Aviation notification of 28 July 2026 closed scheduled commercial operations at the INS Dega civil enclave for 30 years from the start of operations at Bhogapuram, and transferred the code VTZ to the new airport from 17 August 2026. Non-scheduled commercial operations may continue at the enclave.
Take terminal and transport details for the new airport from the operator's website.
The airport is in Vizianagaram district, a road journey outside Visakhapatnam. The operator gives approximate journey times of about 45 minutes from Vizag City Centre, about 50 minutes from RK Beach, about 55 minutes from Vizag Railway Station and about 60 minutes from the Port Area.
The operator says the airport has direct access from National Highway 16 (NH-16) through a signal-free trumpet interchange at Saravalli. Private cars drop passengers at the departure forecourt outside the terminal entrance, and the operator lists short-term and long-term parking near the terminal.
The operator describes air-conditioned shuttle and bus services linking key locations in Visakhapatnam to the terminal, with bus bays beside the city side of the terminal at Arrivals Level 0. The Hans India reported on 10 October 2026 that Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) Aero Express air-conditioned buses connect Old Gajuwaka with the airport, and that the APSRTC mobile app shows bus timings and bus locations. The operator's table of APSRTC routes from Visakhapatnam is headed "proposed", so check routes and stops with APSRTC before you rely on a bus.
Ola, Uber and Rapido have drop-off points outside the departure terminal. Pick-up zones for app-based taxis are in the car parking area just ahead of the terminal, at Arrivals Level 0. Airport taxis and car rentals pick up in the parking area just outside the terminal.
The operator lists self baggage drop in departures, open 24 hours, and complimentary Wi-Fi in all areas. Follow the flight information screens in the terminal, and your airline, for your check-in counters.
The operator lists these facilities:
Wheelchair assistance is at Arrivals, Level 0, open 24 hours. Complimentary electric buggies and meet-and-greet points are at departures and arrivals, and the terminal has tactile pathways.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) lists the photo identity documents accepted at entry to the terminal building, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them, and an international passenger carries a valid passport.
The CISF list says an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof needs no separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, and a foreign national should ask the airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.
The CISF's restricted-articles list, which applies to flights from civil airports in India, allows liquids, aerosols and gels in hand baggage in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag, with each item no more than 100 ml. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are the exceptions.
A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular of 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that power banks may not be used or charged during the flight. Ask your airline about any limit on their size or number.

The DGCA sets out what airlines provide when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023.
A passenger who checked in on time gets meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more on a flight of over 2.5 and up to five hours, or four hours or more on a longer flight. Hotel accommodation, with transfers when necessary, is provided for a total delay of more than 24 hours, or more than six hours on a flight scheduled between 2000 and 0300 hours. The airline is not obliged to provide meals, refreshments or hotel accommodation where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.
When a flight is cancelled and you are told at least 24 hours before departure, the airline offers an alternate flight or a refund. A passenger who was not told in time, or who misses a connection on the same ticket, is offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules together with a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking, or where the cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances.
You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check dgca.gov.in for a later revision, and your airline's current terms, before you rely on these rules.
