Uttarakhand Tourism names Jolly Grant as the nearest airport to Rishikesh, and the Haridwar municipal corporation names it as the nearest to Haridwar. The distances given are 20 to 21 km to Rishikesh and 35 to 36 km to Haridwar, the lower figure in each coming from the Ministry of Civil Aviation's release of 14 February 2024.
Getting to Rishikesh and Haridwar from Jolly Grant Airport
Uttarakhand Tourism says taxis are easily available from Jolly Grant Airport to Rishikesh, and that Rishikesh is well connected to the airport by road. The Haridwar municipal corporation says the same of taxis from the airport to Haridwar.
The terminal building at Jolly Grant Airport
The Union Minister of Civil Aviation inaugurated the airport's new terminal building, including its second phase, on 14 February 2024. The Ministry's release says the building was planned in two phases so that the airport could keep operating while it was built.
When the terminal was inaugurated in February 2024 it was equipped with check-in counters, baggage conveyor belts, baggage X-ray machines and car parking. It is designed to be accessible for passengers with disabilities, with ramps, lifts and specially designed restrooms.
Identity and security at Jolly Grant Airport
Identity documents
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at entry to the terminal building, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them.
The CISF list says an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof does not need a separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more than the CISF list. Foreign nationals should check with their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.
Liquids, banned items and power banks
AAI's security page for the airport and the CISF's restricted-articles list allow liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. Lighters, knives other than round-bladed, butter and plastic ones, tools such as hammers and screwdrivers, sporting goods such as bats and golf clubs, and pepper spray are among the items the CISF list bars from cabin baggage.
A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that power banks may not be used or charged during the flight. Ask your airline about any limit on their size or number.
Registering for the Char Dham and Hemkund Sahib Yatra
If you are flying in for the Char Dham or Hemkund Sahib Yatra, the Uttarakhand government's registration portal says that you need to register yourself and your vehicles before you start the journey, and verify yourself at each shrine when you reach it.
Registration is online or through the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app.

Delays, cancellations and your rights
The DGCA sets out what airlines offer when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023. If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more on a flight of more than 2.5 and up to five hours, and four hours or more on a longer flight. The CAR does not require meals, refreshments or hotel accommodation where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.
If a domestic flight is expected to be delayed by more than six hours from its published departure time, or from a revised time communicated more than 24 hours before the original departure, the airline offers either an alternate flight within six hours or a full refund. For a delay of more than 24 hours, or more than six hours for a flight scheduled to depart between 8 pm and 3 am, the airline provides hotel accommodation when necessary, with transfers.
When a flight is cancelled, the airline arranges an alternate flight or a refund, and a passenger who was not told in time is offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules on top of a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking. The CAR does not require compensation for a cancellation caused by extraordinary circumstances, and it says an airline need not pay compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to air traffic control, weather or security risks.
You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check dgca.gov.in for a later revision and your airline's current rules before you rely on this.
