Madurai International Airport (IXM), also called Madurai Airport, serves the city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) runs it, and the airport is at Avaniyapuram, about 9 to 12 km from Madurai railway station.
The Union Cabinet approved declaring the airport an international airport in March 2026, and customs and immigration are available there for international flights.
The Union Cabinet approved the declaration of the airport as an international airport on 10 March 2026.
Customs-airport status is older: it came from a notification of 31 December 2011, which took effect on 1 January 2012.
Domestic and international passengers use separate departure areas after the security check.
Some aircraft stands have passenger boarding bridges.
The airport is about 9 to 12 km from Madurai railway station. An AAI-authorised taxi service runs from the airport, and an app-based cab service also operates there under AAI authorisation.
Taxis and buses are available during scheduled operations. Auto-rickshaws are available from the city to the airport.
Parking is available at the airport, and it is charged.
Wheelchairs are provided free of charge by the airlines, so ask your airline in advance if you need one. The building has toilets for passengers with disabilities and a ramp for wheelchairs at the entrance and the exit.
To claim an item left behind, send a request letter to AAI with a copy to your airline, giving the flight number, the date and time of the flight, and the baggage tag. Take photo identity and your original boarding pass to AAI's Duty Terminal Manager.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at terminal entry, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them, and an international passenger carries a valid passport.
The CISF list says an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof does not need a separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, and foreign nationals should ask their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.
The CISF restricted-articles list allows liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. The list says it is indicative and that common sense shall prevail.
Lighters, metal scissors with pointed tips, tools such as hammers and drills, and self-defence items such as pepper spray are on the CISF list of items banned in cabin baggage. A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular of 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Ask your airline about any limit on their size or number.
The Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is a twin temple of Sundareswarar and Meenakshi, and its complex covers about 65,000 square metres. It was substantially expanded under Thirumalai Nayak, who became ruler in 1623, and its features include the Ayiramkaal Mandapam (the Hall of Thousand Pillars) and musical pillars.
The Thirumalai Nayak Palace, about 1.5 km from the Meenakshi temple, was built in 1636 by the ruler whose name it bears. The palace has stucco work and the Sorgavilasam pavilion, and its entrance gate, main hall and dance hall can be seen.
Other places to visit in the district include Azhagar Kovil, the Gandhi Museum, Teppakulam and Thirupparankundram Temple.

The DGCA sets out what airlines provide when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023.
If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more on a flight of more than 2.5 and up to 5 hours, and four hours or more on a longer flight. For a total delay of more than 24 hours, or more than 6 hours on a flight scheduled between 2000 and 0300 hours, the CAR also provides for hotel accommodation, with transfers when necessary.
The airline does not have to provide those meals, refreshments or hotel accommodation where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. For a domestic flight expected to be delayed for more than six hours from the published scheduled time of departure or a previously revised departure time (communicated more than 24 hours before the original scheduled departure time), the airline offers either an alternate flight within six hours or a full refund of the ticket.
When a flight is cancelled, a passenger told at least 24 hours before departure is offered an alternate flight or a refund. A passenger who was not told in that time is offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules together with a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking, or where the cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances.
The CAR does not require compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to air traffic control, weather or security risks, or caused by other circumstances beyond the airline's control. You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check dgca.gov.in for a later revision, and your airline's current rules, before you rely on these rules.
