Kannur International Airport (CNN) is 3.3 km west of Mattannur town, in Keralam (Kerala). Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL), a company promoted by the Government of Keralam to build and operate the airport, runs it. It was commissioned on 9 December 2018.
KIAL describes an integrated terminal building on three levels: a basement, an arrival level and a departure level. It calls the design a swing facility, with sliding glass partitions that let the building run as a domestic terminal, an international terminal, or both.
You can check in online, at a self check-in counter or at a check-in counter. KIAL advises checking your airline's own check-in deadline and being at the boarding gate 30 to 40 minutes before boarding.
At the security check, laptops, other electronics and metal objects go in trays, and there is a personal check.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at terminal entry, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them, and an international passenger carries a valid passport.
The CISF list says an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof does not need a separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, and foreign nationals should ask their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.
The CISF restricted-articles list allows liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. The list says it is indicative and that common sense shall prevail.
Lighters, metal scissors with pointed tips, tools such as hammers and drills, and self-defence items such as pepper spray are on the CISF list of items banned in cabin baggage. A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular of 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Ask your airline about any limit on their size or number.
Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses connect the airport with Mattannur, Iritty and Kannur. Mattannur has the nearest bus station to the airport. Check with KSRTC that the service runs, and its times, before you travel.
Ebix Cabs runs pre-paid taxi booking counters just outside the Arrival Hall, one for domestic and one for international arrivals.
Kannur Railway Station is the nearest railway station to the airport, according to KIAL, with a taxi or bus for the rest of the journey. From Thalassery station, KIAL suggests a taxi, or a KSRTC bus to Kannur town and a change there.
KIAL's How to Reach page has driving directions to the airport. The airport has a car park.
Facilities KIAL lists on its passenger terminal page and other passenger pages include:
The terminal has a priority counter for senior citizens and passengers with special needs, a meet and greet and porter service on request, round-the-clock medical support for primary assistance, and washrooms for passengers with reduced mobility.

The same list also names Theyyam and Malabar cuisine.

The DGCA sets out what airlines offer when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023.
If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more on a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more on a flight of more than 2.5 and up to 5 hours, and four hours or more on a longer flight.
For a domestic flight expected to be delayed for more than six hours from the published scheduled time of departure or a previously revised departure time (communicated more than 24 hours before the original scheduled departure time), the airline offers either an alternate flight within six hours or a full refund of the ticket.
For a total delay of more than 24 hours, or more than six hours on a flight scheduled between 2000 and 0300 hours, the CAR also provides for hotel accommodation, with transfers when necessary. Paragraph 3.4.4 of the CAR says an airline is not obliged to provide the meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation set out in its paragraph 3.8 "if the delay is caused due to extra ordinary circumstances as defined in Para 1.4 and Para 1.5 which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken."
When a flight is cancelled, a passenger told more than 24 hours before departure is offered an alternate flight or a refund. A passenger who was not told in that time is offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules together with a full refund, but compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking.
The CAR does not require compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to air traffic control, weather or security risks, or caused by other circumstances beyond the airline's control. You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check dgca.gov.in for a later revision, and your airline's current rules, before you rely on these rules.
