Gwalior Airport (GWL) serves Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, and is about 10 km north-east of Gwalior railway station. According to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), it is also known as Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Airport, named in honour of the late Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia.

The Gwalior district administration describes the airport as a civil enclave at Maharajpur Air Force Station. AAI says it was first established as a military airfield in the early 1960s and evolved over time into a civilian airport.

Gwalior Airport's new terminal building

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the foundation stone of the new terminal building at Gwalior Airport was laid on 16 October 2022. AAI describes the new terminal building as operationalised. In his address of 10 March 2024, the Prime Minister listed Gwalior among the airports where new terminal buildings had been inaugurated.

Facilities and accessibility at Gwalior Airport

The Airports Authority of India's passenger-information page lists charging points for laptops and phones, drinking water, free trolleys, a child care room for babies and breastfeeding, a medical room with a stretcher and wheelchair, and snack bars. It says ramps and accessible toilets are provided for passengers with a disability, and that a wheelchair is requested through the airline, either when you book or at the airline's ticket counter at the airport.

Gwalior Fort and other places to visit in Gwalior

The Gwalior district administration describes Gwalior Fort as standing on a steep mass of sandstone and dominating the city. The road up to it is flanked by statues of the Jain tirthankaras carved into the rock face, and inside the fort the 15th-century Gujari Mahal houses the Archaeological Museum.

India submitted Gwalior Fort, Madhya Pradesh, to the World Heritage Tentative List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on 8 February 2024. A Tentative List entry is not a World Heritage inscription.

According to the district administration, Jai Vilas Palace is the residence of the Scindia family, and some of its rooms have been turned into the Jivaji Rao Scindia Museum.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism also names Teli ka Mandir, the Sas Bahu Temple, Gopachal Parvat, Ghaus Mohammed's tomb, Tansen's tomb and the Sun Temple. It says a music event is held at Tansen's tomb every year in November and December, and that the best time to visit Gwalior is between October and March.

Air India Express check-in, bags, infants and children

Air India Express's conditions of carriage say its check-in counters open two hours and close 60 minutes before a domestic departure, and its boarding gates close 25 minutes before departure. Web check-in opens 14 days and closes 60 minutes before departure. At its discretion, the airline may not offer web check-in to some passengers, such as unaccompanied minors and passengers with special service requests.

The conditions allow one cabin bag within 56 x 36 x 23 cm plus one laptop bag within 30 x 40 x 10 cm, with the two together weighing no more than 7 kg. On the airline's booking page, the Xpress Lite fare includes no checked baggage, and the Xpress Value and Xpress Classic fares include 15 kg on domestic routes. Your ticket decides your allowance, and the conditions say no single piece of baggage may weigh more than 32 kg.

Under the conditions, an infant is a passenger below two years old at departure, travelling on an adult's lap, with one infant per adult. Proof of age is required, and an infant without a government photo identity document needs a valid birth certificate at check-in. The conditions give an infant an additional 10 kg of free checked baggage on the adult's allowance and no cabin baggage allowance; for an infant seven days old or younger, check the rules with Air India Express before you book.

Air India Express's conditions of carriage also say that an infant above seven days and up to one year old, with no complications, needs a fit-to-fly certificate from the treating doctor, submitted 48 hours before departure.

The airline's booking page says assistance is available for children aged 5 to 12 travelling alone. Under the conditions, a parent or guardian submits the unaccompanied minor form, in four copies, at the airport ticketing counter or a city booking office at least six hours before departure, then escorts the child to the ticketing counter 120 minutes before departure and stays at the airport until the flight is in the air. Air India Express accepts unaccompanied minors on direct flights only.

Air India Express sets conditions for expectant mothers by stage of pregnancy, so check them with the airline before you book. It treats power banks as spare batteries, carried in cabin baggage only and individually protected, with a watt-hour rating of no more than 100 Wh for lithium-ion batteries and no more than 2 g of lithium metal content for lithium metal batteries.

IndiGo check-in, bags and delays

IndiGo's check-in counters for domestic flights close 60 minutes before scheduled departure, and its boarding gates close 25 minutes before departure. IndiGo recommends reporting at least 2 hours before departure, and says it reserves the right to cancel a reservation if a customer does not keep to its check-in timelines.

IndiGo's baggage policy allows one cabin bag of up to 7 kg and 55 x 35 x 25 cm, plus one personal article of up to 3 kg, such as a purse or a small bag containing a laptop. Its allowance page gives a domestic checked allowance of 15 kg per person.

A Lite fare, or a similar promotional fare, includes no checked baggage; it can be added for a charge, including at the airport check-in counter before the counters close. IndiGo says baggage requirements differ from flight to flight and that the booking confirmation and ticket carry the most accurate details, so check yours before you pack.

IndiGo says that if it delays a flight by more than 2 hours or brings it forward by more than 1 hour, customers are entitled to a full refund or rebooking onto an alternative IndiGo flight at no additional cost, subject to availability.

Identity documents, liquids and power banks

Under the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) list of valid photo identity documents, a passenger carries any one of them in original, with a valid ticket, at entry to the terminal building. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them, and an unaccompanied minor needs one too. Airlines may ask for more, so check with your airline.

Under the CISF's restricted-articles list, liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in containers of up to 100 ml each, in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag; medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are the exceptions. A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries go in hand baggage only and not in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. For IndiGo and Akasa Air, check the airline's own power-bank rules before you fly.

Delays, cancellations and passenger rights

Under the DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023, airlines are not liable for compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to meteorological conditions. IndiGo says that if you give an SMS-capable mobile number at booking, it will tell you of a change to your flight in advance by SMS, and it sends the revised itinerary by email.

The same CAR says the duty to provide meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation during a delay does not apply where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Cancellation compensation is not due to a passenger who gave no email address or phone number at booking, so give your contact details when you book.

You can complain to the airline directly or file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal. The CAR is the document to read for the full terms.
