Gorakhpur Airport (GOP) serves Gorakhpur, a city in the north-eastern part of Uttar Pradesh near the Nepal border, 273 km east of Lucknow. It is a civil enclave at the Indian Air Force station in Gorakhpur: the Airports Authority of India (AAI) runs the civil airport for passengers, and the airfield is shared by defence and civil flights.
The airport is about 6 km east of the city and about 7 to 8 km from Gorakhpur Junction railway station. Taxis and city buses are available just outside the main gate.
The airfield is the Indian Air Force's, and the Senior Air Traffic Control Officer of the Air Force station at Gorakhpur is the aerodrome operator. AAI runs the civil airport and its passenger terminal, and AAI's Gorakhpur Airport page carries the airport's contact details and latest news.
There is no customs or immigration service at the aerodrome.
The airport is on the Gorakhpur-Kushinagar highway. Taxis are available at the civil terminal and can be booked just outside the airport's main gate, and app-based taxi services are also available. Local city buses can be taken just outside the main gate.
Gorakhpur Junction railway station is about 7 to 8 km from the airport, and hotels are in Gorakhpur city, about 6 km away. Two-wheeler rental is not currently available at the airport.
The lounge at Gorakhpur Airport is only for very important persons (VIPs) designated by the government. Smokers have a smoking lounge in the domestic security hold area.
Baggage wrapping is not available at the airport, so wrap or strap a checked bag before you leave if you want it done. For cash there are State Bank of India cash machine counters, and for medical care there is a hospital in Gorakhpur city.
On 31 December 2024 the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority, Uttar Pradesh, granted AAI a prior environmental clearance to expand the airport with a new civil enclave. The plan covers a new terminal building, an apron, multi-level car parking and a link taxiway at the village of Kunraghat in Gorakhpur district.
A Press Trust of India report, carried by The Week on 25 June 2025, said a memorandum of understanding for the new terminal building had been signed on 24 June 2025.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at entry to the terminal building. Any one of them is carried in original, with a valid ticket, and a passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them.
On the CISF list, an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof needs no separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, and a foreign national should ask the airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.
The CISF's restricted-articles list applies to flights from civil airports in India. Under it, liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag, with medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, as the exceptions. The same list keeps lighters, tools, sporting goods such as bats, and knives other than round-bladed, butter and plastic ones out of cabin baggage.
A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Ask your airline about any limit on their size or number.
The airlines recorded on these flights are IndiGo and Akasa Air. Direct domestic flights recorded from Gorakhpur go to:

The DGCA sets out what airlines provide when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023. If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more for a flight with a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more for more than 2.5 and up to five hours, and four hours or more for a longer block time. Hotel accommodation, including transfers, is offered when necessary once the total delay is more than 24 hours, or more than six hours for a flight scheduled between 2000 and 0300 hours.
The meals and hotel duties do not apply where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. If a domestic flight is expected to be delayed by more than six hours from its published departure time, or from a revised time communicated more than 24 hours before the original departure, the airline offers either an alternate flight within six hours or a full refund.
When a flight is cancelled, the airline offers an alternate flight or a refund, and a passenger who was not told in time is offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules on top of a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking, or where the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances.
Under the same CAR, airlines are not liable for compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to meteorological conditions. On a winter trip, check your flight's status with the airline before you set off for the airport.
You can complain to the airline directly, file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, or go to a statutory body or court. Check your airline's current rules, and the DGCA for any later revision of the CAR, before you rely on this.
Gorakhpur Junction railway station is about 7 to 8 km from the airport. The airport is about 6 km east of Gorakhpur city, on the Gorakhpur-Kushinagar highway.

The lounge at Gorakhpur Airport is only for VIPs designated by the government. There is a smoking lounge in the domestic security hold area.
