Distance to Kolhapur city and transport to the Mahalaxmi temple

The airport is about 9 km from Kolhapur city. Maharashtra Tourism says taxis and autorickshaws run from the airport to the Mahalaxmi temple.

The Mahalaxmi temple and other places in Kolhapur

Maharashtra Tourism describes the Mahalaxmi temple, also known as the Ambabai Temple, as dedicated to Goddess Mahalaxmi and one of the Shakti Peethas. It dates the temple to the 7th century and the Chalukya ruler Karandev, and describes its architecture as Hemadpanti in style.

The same body names Navratri as the temple's most celebrated festival, says Kirnotsav, the "festival of rays", takes place twice a year, and gives October to March as the best time to visit.

According to Maharashtra Tourism, Bhavani Mandap is a short walk from the temple, and the New Palace, about 2 km from the temple, houses a museum of royal artefacts and memorabilia from the Kolhapur dynasty. It also names Rankala Lake and the Jyotiba Temple on its hilltop, and puts Panhala Fort around 20 km from the city.

Incredible India lists the Shree Chhatrapati Shahu Museum and Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary among the sights, and describes Kolhapuri chappals as celebrated for their design and craftsmanship. Kolhapuri Misal and Kolhapuri Gul (jaggery) are the local foods it names.

Flying IndiGo from Kolhapur

IndiGo's check-in counters for domestic flights close 60 minutes before scheduled departure, and its boarding gates close 25 minutes before departure. IndiGo recommends reporting at least 2 hours before departure, and says it reserves the right to cancel a reservation if a customer does not keep to its check-in timelines.

IndiGo's baggage policy allows one cabin bag of up to 7 kg and 55 x 35 x 25 cm, plus one personal article of up to 3 kg, such as a purse or a small bag containing a laptop. Its allowance page gives a domestic checked allowance of 15 kg per person.

A Lite fare, or a similar promotional fare, includes no checked baggage; it can be added for a charge, including at the airport check-in counter before the counters close. IndiGo says baggage requirements differ from flight to flight and that the booking confirmation and ticket carry the most accurate details, so check yours.

IndiGo's conditions of carriage say that on unconnected flight segments it is not responsible if a customer misses the flight to the final destination because of a delay to the IndiGo flight, and that it provides no compensation or facility in that case.

Flying Star Air from Kolhapur

Star Air advises reporting to its check-in counter at least 2 hours before departure. The counter closes 60 minutes before departure, and boarding gates close 25 minutes before. Star Air's conditions also ask passengers who have checked in online to be at the boarding gate 30 minutes before departure.

Web check-in is on starair.in: check your booking and starair.in for when it opens and closes. Passengers who need special assistance, such as a wheelchair, should pre-book it at least 48 hours before departure, and they check in at the airport counter, as Star Air does not let them use online check-in.

You can take one cabin bag of up to 7 kg, and a laptop counts towards that weight. Star Air's conditions also list items carried in addition to the cabin bag, such as a handbag, a camera, an overcoat and medicines needed during the flight.

The checked allowance depends on the fare: Star Air's conditions give 15 kg on Star Regular and Star Flexi, and 20 kg on Star Comfort and the Business fares. Star Air says the free checked allowance follows the fare rules on the ticket, so check yours.

Identity documents, liquids and power banks

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) list of photo identity documents accepted at entry to an airport terminal includes a passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence, carried in original with a valid ticket. An infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof needs no separate document on the CISF list, but an unaccompanied minor does. Airlines may ask for more, so check with IndiGo or Star Air.

In cabin baggage, the CISF restricted-articles list allows liquids, aerosols and gels in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are the exceptions.

A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries go in hand baggage only and not in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Star Air allows power banks only in hand baggage, and IndiGo sets its own limits on their size and number, so check your airline's baggage pages before you fly.

Delays, cancellations and passenger rights

Under the DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023, airlines are not liable for compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to meteorological conditions.

IndiGo says that if it delays a flight by more than 2 hours or brings it forward by more than 1 hour, customers are entitled to a full refund or rebooking onto an alternative IndiGo flight at no additional cost, subject to availability. Star Air's conditions of carriage say that if a flight is cancelled or rescheduled by more than two and a half hours (depending on the length of the journey), a passenger can choose a refund or a rebooking on another Star Air flight at no additional cost, subject to availability, as per the DGCA's rules.

The CAR says the duty to provide meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation during a delay does not apply where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Cancellation compensation is not due to a passenger who gave no email address or phone number at booking, so give your contact details when you book. You can complain to the airline directly or file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal.
