Silchar Airport (IXS) stands at Kumbhirgram in Cachar district, Assam, about 27 kilometres north-east of Silchar city, and serves Silchar. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) describes it as a civil enclave, built during the Second World War, with air traffic control provided by the Indian Air Force.
The airport is out of town, so plan the ride into Silchar before you land. If you are an Indian visitor from another state going on to Mizoram, you need Mizoram's Inner Line Permit; the Government of Mizoram's liaison officer in Silchar is one of the officials who can issue a temporary permit, valid for up to 15 days.
Private taxis are available outside the airport, near the arrival exit. The Airports Authority of India lists an air-conditioned bus service run by the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) for pick-up and drop between the airport and Silchar, with the car parking as its landmark.
There is a cafeteria inside the airport and an ATM at the airport.
AAI describes Silchar, the headquarters of Cachar district on the southern bank of the Barak River, as a gateway to Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur. An Indian tourist from another state needs a Mizoram Inner Line Permit (ILP), issued by the Government of Mizoram, to visit Mizoram.
A temporary ILP, valid for up to 15 days, is issued to bona fide visitors, tourists and business representatives by several officials, and the Government of Mizoram's liaison officer in Silchar is one of them. The Aizawl district administration's entry formalities and Inner Line Permit branch page set out the entry rules, the permit types and who issues them, so read them before you head for Mizoram.
Foreign tourists in Mizoram have separate requirements, including reporting to the Foreigners Registration Office within 24 hours of arrival. Check the Government of Mizoram's current rules before you plan that leg.
The airline recorded on these flights is IndiGo. Direct domestic flights recorded from Silchar go to:
| Destination | Airport | Airlines recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Guwahati | Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) | IndiGo |
| Kolkata | Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) | IndiGo |
For domestic flights, IndiGo closes its check-in counters 60 minutes before the scheduled departure and its boarding gates 25 minutes before departure, and it recommends reporting at least 2 hours before departure. Miss the counter deadline and IndiGo reserves the right to cancel the booking.
IndiGo's baggage policy allows one cabin bag of up to 7 kg and 55 x 35 x 25 cm, plus one personal article such as a laptop or a purse of up to 3 kg. A cabin bag goes in the overhead bin or under the seat if there is space, and IndiGo may move a bag that does not fit to the hold, to be collected at the baggage belt.
The checked allowance depends on the fare, and a Lite fare or similar promotional fare may carry checked baggage only if you pay excess charges at the airport counter. On its ATR aircraft, IndiGo limits a checked bag to 152 x 58 x 101 cm. Check your booking confirmation and ticket for your own allowance, as IndiGo advises.
Security at Silchar Airport is provided by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The CISF publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at entry to the terminal, carried in original with a valid ticket, and a passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them.
On the CISF list, an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof needs no separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does. IndiGo asks for proof of an infant's age at check-in. A foreign national should ask IndiGo which document it accepts for a domestic flight.
Under the CISF's restricted-articles list, liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag; medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Ask IndiGo about any limit on their size or number.
If IndiGo cancels your flight, brings it forward by 1 hour or more, or postpones it by 2 hours or more, its Plan B lets you rebook on a different flight at no additional cost or take a full refund. IndiGo says it notifies eligible passengers by SMS, email and calls on their registered contact details.
The DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023, sets what airlines provide on delays, cancellations and denied boarding. The duty to provide meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation on a long delay does not apply where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Compensation for a cancellation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking, or where the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances.
Khaspur was once the capital of the Kachari kingdom, and the remnants of the Royal Palace of Khaspur stand at Udharband, 20 km from Silchar city. The Kancha Kanti Kali Mandir is about 14 km from the city centre.
The Bhubaneswar Temple, which Assam Tourism calls one of Assam's most important Shiva temples, is about 50 km from Silchar on top of Bhuban Hill, and reaching it takes a hike from the plains. Maibong, in Dima Hasao district and 62 km from Silchar, was the ancient capital of the Kachari kingdom and has the Ek Patthar Ghar, a temple Assam Tourism dates to the 12th century.
Assam Tourism also points visitors to Dolu Lake, the Maniharan Tunnel and Badarpur Fort.
On 26 February 2026 the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change granted environmental clearance for AAI's proposed greenfield airport at Doloo, Silchar, subject to conditions.
The airport is at Kumbhirgram, about 27 kilometres north-east of Silchar city.
Private taxis are available outside the airport near the arrival exit, and the Airports Authority of India lists an air-conditioned bus service run by the ASTC between the airport and Silchar, with the car parking as its landmark.
The Government of Mizoram's liaison officer in Silchar is one of the officials authorised to issue a temporary ILP, valid for up to 15 days, to bona fide visitors, tourists and business representatives.
