Kanpur Civil Airport (KNU) serves Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) calls it Chakeri Airport, Kanpur, and describes it as a civil enclave: a joint-user airfield of AAI and the Indian Air Force.

The direct domestic flights recorded from Kanpur go to Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi with IndiGo.

The 2023 civil enclave and Kanpur's other aerodrome

AAI said in a release of 8 June 2023 that a new upgraded civil enclave at Kanpur Airport was inaugurated on 26 May 2023. The first flight from the new building operated on 7 June 2023.

AAI also has a separate aerodrome, Kanpur Cantt, in the cantonment area of Kanpur. AAI says Kanpur Cantt is used mainly for flying training, and that at present no scheduled commercial passenger services operate from it.

Getting to and from Kanpur Civil Airport

According to the Airports Authority of India, private taxis are available outside, near the arrival exit, and parking is on the city side.

For rail travel, the district administration of Kanpur Nagar says Kanpur Central railway station has trains to many parts of the country, among them Delhi, Varanasi, Lucknow, Howrah, Mumbai and Chennai.

The district administration also says Kanpur is about 80 km west of Lucknow. It gives Lucknow's Amausi airport, Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, as the nearest international airport, about 65 km away.

IndiGo check-in and baggage rules

IndiGo's check-in counters for domestic flights close 60 minutes before scheduled departure, and its boarding gates close 25 minutes before departure. IndiGo recommends reporting at least 2 hours before departure, and says it reserves the right to cancel a reservation if a customer does not keep to its check-in timelines.

IndiGo's baggage policy allows one cabin bag of up to 7 kg and 55 x 35 x 25 cm, plus one personal article of up to 3 kg, such as a purse or a small bag containing a laptop. Its allowance page gives 15 kg of checked baggage per person on domestic flights.

A Lite fare, or a similar promotional fare, includes no checked baggage; it can be added for a charge, including at the airport check-in counter before the counters close. A customer travelling with an infant may carry an additional piece of hand baggage, and one stroller or pram per infant is carried without charge.

IndiGo says baggage requirements differ from flight to flight, and that the booking confirmation and ticket carry the most accurate details. Check yours before you pack.

Identity and security checks for flights from Kanpur

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at entry to the terminal building, and a passenger carries any one of them in original, with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them. On the CISF list, an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof needs no separate document, but an unaccompanied minor does; airlines may ask for more, so check with IndiGo.

Under the CISF's restricted-articles list, liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, re-sealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are the exceptions.

A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage, not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. For any limit on their size or number, check IndiGo's own baggage pages.

Delays, cancellations and weather

Under the DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023, airlines are not liable for compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to meteorological conditions. IndiGo says that if you give an SMS-capable mobile number at booking, it will tell you of a change to your flight in advance by SMS, and it sends the revised itinerary by email.

The same CAR says the duty to provide meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation during a delay does not apply where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Cancellation compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking, so give your contact details when you book.

If IndiGo cancels a flight, brings it forward by 1 hour or more, or postpones it by 2 hours or more, its Plan B page lets you rebook on a different flight at no additional cost or take a full refund. IndiGo's conditions of carriage say that on unconnected flight segments it is not responsible if a customer misses the flight to the final destination because of a delay to the IndiGo flight, and that it provides no compensation or facility in that case.

You can complain to the airline directly or file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal, and the CAR is the document to read for the full terms.

Kanpur's sights and Bithoor

The district administration describes Kanpur, on the south bank of the Ganga, as a major industrial town that is also known as the industrial capital of Uttar Pradesh. AAI names the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur among the city's institutions.

Places the district lists include the Bhitargaon Temple, which it calls one of the finest brick temples of India, the JK Temple, Allen Forest Zoo (Kanpur Zoological Park) and the Jagannath Mandir at Behta. The district adds that international cricket matches are held at Green Park, that Nana Rao Park was formerly the Memorial Well Garden, and that Kanpur Memorial Church is All Souls' Cathedral.

AAI describes Bithoor as a town on the right bank of the Ganga, about 23 km by road north of the centre of Kanpur, and as a centre of Hindu pilgrimage and of the revolt of 1857.
