The new terminal building at Thoothukudi Airport

The Government of India release of 26 July 2025 says the Prime Minister inaugurated the new terminal building at Thoothukudi Airport and walked through it. It says the terminal has LED lighting throughout, energy-efficient systems and an on-site sewage treatment plant whose treated water is reused, and that it was built to achieve a sustainability rating.

Taxis, car hire, banks and facilities

India's aeronautical information publication lists taxis and car hire from the city and from outside the airport, 4 km away. Banks and a post office are listed outside the airport, also 4 km away, and in the city. First aid and a tourist office are listed at the airport, with hotels, restaurants and hospitals in the city.

According to the Airports Authority of India, the airport's conveniences include a car rental service, drinking water, help for passengers with reduced mobility, a child care room, wheelchairs, trolleys, and medical and first aid facilities.

Our Lady of Snow church and the port of Thoothukudi

According to the Thoothukudi district administration, the Panimaya Matha Church (the Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Snow) was built by the Portuguese in 1711. The district describes Thoothukudi as a natural port, from which the freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaranar ran the Swadeshi shipping company during British rule. It names pearl fishing, shipping and salt production as the city's traditional trades.

Korkai, Manapad and other places the district describes

The district administration describes Korkai as an ancient port city of the Pandian dynasty, on the main road from Tiruchendur to Thoothukudi and 29 km from Tiruchendur, with an ancient Vettrivelamman Temple. It describes Kayalpattinam, 30 km from Thoothukudi, as a port next to Korkai in the 12th and 13th centuries, with a beach on the Bay of Bengal.

The district says St Francis Xavier visited Manapad, a coastal village 18 km south of Tiruchendur, in 1542, and that its Holy Cross church is built on a cliff.

The district names Ettayapuram, 35 km from Thoothukudi, as the birthplace of the poet Subramaniya Bharathiyar, whose home is now a monument. It describes a Jain temple at Kazhugumalai, 21 km from Kovilpatti, with images of Adinatha, Neminatha, Mahaveera, Parvanatha and Bahubali, and a monolithic temple there called Vettuvan Kovil. It calls Panchalankurichi a small historic village 25 km from Thoothukudi.

AAI names the Kattabomman Memorial Fort at Panchalankurichi among the tourist places for the airport, along with Tiruchendur, Kuttralam, Kanyakumari, the Srivaikuntanathan Perumal Temple at Srivaikuntam and the Nellaiappar Temple in Tirunelveli.

IndiGo check-in, baggage and changes

IndiGo's check-in counters for domestic flights close 60 minutes before scheduled departure, and its boarding gates close 25 minutes before departure. IndiGo recommends reporting at least 2 hours before departure, and says it reserves the right to cancel a reservation if a customer does not keep to its check-in timelines.

IndiGo's baggage policy allows one cabin bag of up to 7 kg and 55 x 35 x 25 cm, plus one personal article of up to 3 kg, such as a purse or a small bag containing a laptop. Its allowance page gives a domestic checked allowance of 15 kg per person.

A Lite fare, or a similar promotional fare, includes no checked baggage; it can be added for a charge, including at the airport check-in counter before the counters close. IndiGo says baggage requirements differ from flight to flight and that the booking confirmation and ticket carry the most accurate details, so check yours.

IndiGo says that if it delays a flight by more than 2 hours or brings it forward by more than 1 hour, customers are entitled to a full refund or rebooking onto an alternative IndiGo flight at no additional cost, subject to availability.

Identity documents, liquids and power banks

Under the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) list of valid photo identity documents, a passenger carries any one of them in original, with a valid ticket, at entry to the terminal building. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them, and an unaccompanied minor needs one too. Airlines may ask for more, so check with your airline.

Under the CISF's restricted-articles list, liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage go in containers of up to 100 ml each, in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag; medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are the exceptions. A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries go in hand baggage only and not in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Check IndiGo's own baggage pages for its limits on power banks before you fly.

Delays, cancellations and passenger rights

Under the DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023, airlines are not liable for compensation for cancellations and delays clearly attributable to meteorological conditions. IndiGo says that if you give an SMS-capable mobile number at booking, it will tell you of a change to your flight in advance by SMS, and it sends the revised itinerary by email.

The same CAR says the duty to provide meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation during a delay does not apply where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Cancellation compensation is not due to a passenger who gave no email address or phone number at booking, so give your contact details when you book.

You can complain to the airline directly or file a grievance on the Air Sewa app or portal. The CAR is the document to read for the full terms.
