Rajahmundry Airport (RJA) is a domestic airport at Madhurapudi, in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, serving the city of Rajamahendravaram (Rajahmundry). The Airports Authority of India (AAI) runs it. The airport is about 15 to 16 km north of the city centre.
Terminal opening hours at Rajahmundry Airport
The terminal building opens to passengers at 5.30 am and stays open until the last scheduled flight of the day has left. For security reasons the main entrance gate is closed outside operating hours: it shuts after the last scheduled departure and opens again at 5.30 am the next day. A traveller who reaches the airport before the gate reopens at 5.30 am waits outside the terminal building.
The terminal building and the new terminal
Flights use one terminal building. The Minister for Civil Aviation laid the foundation stone for a new terminal building at Rajahmundry Airport on 10 December 2023. When the Minister inspected the construction on 8 February 2026, the Ministry of Civil Aviation described the works as ongoing and reported directions to expedite progress.
The Ministry's release of December 2023 set out a plan to convert the existing terminal into the arrival building, and listed aerobridges, food and retail outlets, facilities for passengers with disabilities and a car-parking area among the airport's planned passenger facilities. The runway and the aircraft it takes
AAI's runway extension was inaugurated on 12 February 2019, and since then the airport has been able to handle narrow-body aircraft such as the Airbus A320, the A321 and the Boeing 737 Max series. IndiGo began Airbus A320 flights to Mumbai on 1 December 2024 and to Delhi on 12 December 2024.
Distance and car rental at Rajahmundry Airport
The airport is at Madhurapudi, about 15 to 16 km north of Rajamahendravaram. AAI lists Wise Travel India as the car rental operator in the arrival area.
Facilities at Rajahmundry Airport
AAI lists these facilities. Wi-Fi covers the whole terminal building, and there are mobile charging points and an ATM. A child care room and medical and first-aid facilities are also provided, along with business and VIP facilities.
Wheelchairs and baggage trolleys are available for both departing and arriving passengers. For physically challenged, older and infirm passengers, there are ramps at the departure entry and the arrival exit, and a toilet at departure. There is a hotel counter at the arrival exit.
Identity and security at Rajahmundry Airport
Identity documents
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at entry to the terminal building, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them.
Under the CISF list, an infant or minor travelling with a parent or guardian who holds valid identity proof needs no separate document, while an unaccompanied minor needs one from the list. Airlines may ask for more, and a foreign national should check with the airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.
Liquids, banned items and power banks
The CISF's restricted-articles list allows liquids, aerosols and gels in cabin baggage in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions. Lighters, tools, sporting goods such as bats, and knives other than round-bladed, butter and plastic ones are among the items kept out of cabin baggage.
A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular dated 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries are to be carried in hand baggage only and not placed in overhead bins, and that using or charging power banks is not allowed during flight. Ask your airline about any limit on their size or number.

Places to visit from Rajamahendravaram
The Godavari is about 4 km wide at Rajamahendravaram and 7 km wide at Dowleswaram, on the East Godavari district's figures. The Godavari Bridge, a road-cum-rail bridge, links Kovvur with the city, and the Dowleswaram Barrage was built on the last stretch of the river for irrigation. The Cotton Museum is at Dowleswaram.
In the city are the Rallabandi Museum, the Damerla Ramarao Art Gallery, the Gowthami Library, the Markandeya Swamy Temple and the Pedda Masjid. Kadiyapulanka, a village near the city, grows flowers and ornamental plants, and its flower show is held in January (check the dates locally).
The Papi Hills (Papikondalu) are about 100 to 110 km from the city. The day trip is a bus from Rajamahendravaram to the boarding point at the Gandipochamma Temple in Devipatnam Mandal, then a boat on the Godavari past Kolluru, Sirivaka, Papikondalu and Perantapalli and back to the city. Check that the boats are running, and how to book, before you plan a day around it.
The Godavari Pushkaralu is due to be held in 2027, and the district plans new permanent Pushkar ghats, with Rajamahendravaram among the areas named for development. Check the dates with the district before you book flights around it.
Delays, cancellations and your rights
The DGCA sets out what airlines provide when a flight is delayed or cancelled, or a passenger is denied boarding, in its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, Revision 4, dated 25 January 2023 and effective from 15 February 2023. If you checked in on time, the airline provides meals and refreshments once a delay is expected to reach two hours or more for a block time of up to 2.5 hours, three hours or more for a block time of more than 2.5 and up to five hours, and four hours or more for a longer block time. That duty, and the duty to provide hotel accommodation on a long delay, does not apply where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.
If a domestic flight is expected to be delayed by more than six hours from its published departure time, or from a revised time communicated more than 24 hours before the original departure, the airline offers either an alternate flight within six hours or a full refund.
When a flight is cancelled, the airline offers an alternate flight or a refund, and a passenger who was not told in time is offered either an alternate flight, or compensation under the DGCA's rules on top of a full refund. Compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking, or where the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances.
