Planned expansion of Shillong Airport

On 28 March 2026 the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority, Meghalaya, granted environmental clearance to AAI for a planned expansion of the airport: a runway extension and an expanded terminal building and apron. The clearance letter says it is not an approval, consent or permission required under any other Act, rule or regulation. On 22 July 2026 the Government of Meghalaya said AAI had awarded the runway expansion work.

Shillong, Sohra and places to visit

Meghalaya Tourism describes Shillong as Meghalaya's capital, founded by the British in the second half of the nineteenth century.

The Airports Authority of India names Ward's Lake, Lady Hydari Park, Shillong Peak, the Don Bosco Museum, Elephant Falls, Umiam Lake, Mawlynnong, Sohra (Cherrapunji) and Nohkalikai Falls among the tourist places for Shillong.

On 15 April 2025 the Sohra Civil Sub Division of the Government of Meghalaya issued a safety advisory for visitors to the Sohra area. It asked them to take care near water bodies, cliffs and jungles, especially in the monsoon, and to hire certified local guides if they want to explore.

When to visit Shillong and Meghalaya

Meghalaya Tourism suggests October to April for pleasant weather, clear skies and sightseeing, and the monsoon months of July to September for the scenery and waterfalls. For the monsoon it advises packing for rain and checking the daily forecast for warnings of heavy rain and landslides. In the monsoon, Meghalaya Tourism says swimming and other water activities are not permitted in most areas, for safety reasons.

Winter is a busy season for tourists, and Meghalaya Tourism advises booking accommodation in advance.

Entry advice from Meghalaya Tourism

Meghalaya Tourism lists Umroi Airport among the state's major entry points and advises visitors to carry government-issued identity.

Flying IndiGo from Shillong Airport

IndiGo's check-in counters for domestic flights close 60 minutes before scheduled departure, and its boarding gates close 25 minutes before departure. It recommends reporting at least 2 hours before departure, and it may cancel a reservation that does not keep to these check-in timelines.

IndiGo's baggage policy allows one cabin bag of up to 7 kg and 55 x 35 x 25 cm on domestic flights, plus one personal article, such as a purse or a laptop, of up to 3 kg. The free checked allowance depends on the fare type, and a Lite Fare may not include any checked baggage unless excess baggage charges are paid at the airport. IndiGo says baggage requirements differ from flight to flight, so check your booking confirmation and ticket.

Identity and security rules for domestic flights

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) publishes the list of photo identity documents accepted at terminal entry, carried in original with a valid ticket. A passport, Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar, a voter photo identity card and a driving licence are among them. Airlines may ask for more, and foreign nationals should ask their airline which document it accepts for a domestic flight.

In cabin baggage, the CISF restricted-articles list allows liquids, aerosols and gels in containers of up to 100 ml each, packed in one clear, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Medicine or an inhaler accompanied by a prescription, and baby food, are exceptions.

A Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular of 11 November 2025 says power banks and spare batteries go in hand baggage only, not in overhead bins, and are not to be used or charged during flight. Check IndiGo's baggage page for any limit on their size or number.

Delays and cancellations on IndiGo

IndiGo says that if a flight is delayed by more than 2 hours, or brought forward by more than 1 hour, you can take a full refund or move to another IndiGo flight at no additional cost, subject to availability. Its Plan B option offers a rebooking or a full refund when a flight is cancelled, brought forward by 1 hour or more, or put back by 2 hours or more.

IndiGo says compensation for a cancellation or delay follows the DGCA's Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV. In the DGCA's Revision 4 of that CAR, dated 25 January 2023, cancellation compensation is not due to a passenger who gave the airline no email address or phone number at booking, or where the cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances.

If you checked in on time, the CAR provides meals and refreshments during a long delay, and hotel accommodation when necessary for a total delay of more than 24 hours, or more than 6 hours on a flight scheduled between 2000 and 0300 hours. The airline does not have to provide these where the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.
